Top line of screen

At the top line of screen, there are a collection of icons. Two questions:

1. What is this top line called?
2. How can I add/delete entries?

Those icons in the menu bar are called menu bar items. To get rid of them, hold down the command key and mouse-drag them off the menu bar. Poof!

1. menu bar
2. if they're on the right-hand side, they're menu extras. CMD-click and drag off should remove them.

Thanks for the reply.
1. By Menu, do you mean Menu Bar?
2. To start with, I'd like to remove several of the icons. They were installed both at system startup and when I downloaded an application.
