27" Cinema Display Sound Issues

My apologies for posting about an issue that has already been covered but I think it is important to highlight what seems to be a pervasive issue with this otherwise awesome display.

Like others, mine worked b-e-a-utifully out of the box. A few days into it however, the sound stopped. I have tried the "unplugging for 15 seconds" trick and it is a temporary fix. I also tried, at the suggestion of Apple Supports, restarting the computer and holding down the command, option, "r" and "p" keys simultaneously until you hear two beeps. That is also a temporary fix.

I want to echo the advise to call Apple Support every time this happens to ensure this issue gets the attention it deserves.

Apart from this very annoying issue, this is one sweet display. I watched Avatar on it the first night just to test it out. I only intended to watch a few minutes but ended up watching the whole thing. Terrific! Of course that was when the sound worked.

My 27" Cinema Display is also having these intermittent sound issues. In addition to the sound cutting out, the iSight seems to go as well. Have others had the intermittent iSight issue as well?

My call to support yielded the usual, an SMC reset (which happens by default every night when I unplug it) or taking it to a Certified Apple Repair location. The latter seems useless, if there is nothing that can be fixed.

My suggestion to all is TAKE IT BACK FOR A FULL REFUND! If it ends up being a software update then OK it's easy to fix but if it is a design problem that has to be repaired then you have to take your shiny new monitor in to let some "Apple Certified Technician" (I use this term loosely) open up your nice new monitor and do whatever. Hopefully all this is done so it still looks like new when it's done but I've had repair jobs done and ended up with scratches, damaged screw heads etc. Repairs on an old unit OK but I paid good money and I like my stuff to be in mint out of the box condition so I wasn't going to take a chance and keep my fingers crossed it's only a software problem. Why should you have to have your brand new monitor repaired anyway? Take it back, then when this issue is resolved go buy a brand new one that many have some added updates or design changes your repaired unit may not. Plus I'm sure Apple will sit up and take notice about this problem a lot sooner if lots of monitors start being returned.

Same problem with new MBP 13" and 27" Cinema display. Audio becomes disabled and I cannot even select Display Audio (USB) audio from Sound preferences pane. The only options available are Internal Speakers and LED Cinema (DisplayPort), which doesn't work.

Unplugging the monitor power cable, waiting 10 seconds and then reconnecting fixes the problem. I am using my MBP in closed mode, so only the Cinema display is in use.

bleah, have a "me too".

27" brand new (~oct30,2010) display w/ a brand new mac mini (~sep30,2010)

sound worked for a week or so, then no sound. updated to latest mac OS update, reboot, still no sound.

have also had the computer now (3-4 times) not be able to wake the display up when the computer either comes out of sleep (or what may have happened is i walked away for hours, assumed it slept (the monitor certainly did) and the computer was still awake but the monitor was not -- and the monitor would not wake. that at least was one of the 3-4 times).

soooooo pretty, this monitor. what's with the "windows-esque experience", apple? 8-)

re: unplugging monitor seems to do the trick...

anyone try plugging into a power strip with a switch and flipping switch on/off to see if that's the equiv. of unplugging? Just curious, as I want one of these so badly, but am holding off cos of the sound problems. If the power strip switch thing works, the maybe I can live with it... I think it's good to totally cut power at night to eliminate the vampire power suck anyway?

Same problem here with the 27" display. Seems to happen everytime I restart my MacBook. When I power my MacBook off and then switch it back on, the issue is resolved.
