27" Cinema Display Sound Issues

My apologies for posting about an issue that has already been covered but I think it is important to highlight what seems to be a pervasive issue with this otherwise awesome display.

Like others, mine worked b-e-a-utifully out of the box. A few days into it however, the sound stopped. I have tried the "unplugging for 15 seconds" trick and it is a temporary fix. I also tried, at the suggestion of Apple Supports, restarting the computer and holding down the command, option, "r" and "p" keys simultaneously until you hear two beeps. That is also a temporary fix.

I want to echo the advise to call Apple Support every time this happens to ensure this issue gets the attention it deserves.

Apart from this very annoying issue, this is one sweet display. I watched Avatar on it the first night just to test it out. I only intended to watch a few minutes but ended up watching the whole thing. Terrific! Of course that was when the sound worked.

I'm also in the no sound club.

Frankly I don't care if there are work arounds with unplugging the power or deleting preference files. It's ridiculous that this many people are all having the same issue like this. I bought this monitor because I discovered the hard way that my 24" acer monitors were 'incompatible' with OS X's video drivers. So I had a choice between waiting around not working until Apple released a OS X update that fixed the issue (not bloody likely) or buy an Apple brand monitor that was guaranteed to work (ha). Apple has no excuse for this. It's their monitor hooked up to their computer running their operating system. How could product testing not catch this?

It's clear to me now that Apple is far more concerned with making portable toys for the masses than high end equipment that works.

Ok, maybe that last bit was a bit over dramatic, but it is rather annoying that the single most expensive computer I've ever purchased has also had the most problems out of the box.

Perhaps if we sent the link to this topic to many of the popular blog sites that cover Apple hardware and software like "Cult of Mac.". I'm sure if some of these other sites picked up on the unanswered problems we have been having with this monitor it would get some attention. Like other high profile issues with iPhones or MacBook Air?

Try making some ripples and see if they will give us an answer here

I might be one of the fortunate ones. I posted on this link on 11 November - with the same issues as everyone else - I dumped the plist files - NB from the main Library/Audio file not the User Library/Audio file - as advised by another contri3and service was resumed to normal. Still OK two weeks later. I might be tempting providence of course mentioning this....

There is obviously an issue and it should be addressed by Apple. My guess is a firmware update is required - but the cause needs to be identified first. It would be nice to know that Apple are investigating.

I would also like to see this issue mentioned on review sites. Before I bought my display, I researched on the usual sites - but no mention of this problem. I am a fairly new convert to the Apple world, and thought that everything Apple would work as advertised. So, it is surprising to me that this problem exists at all.

It is even more surprising to me that Apple seems unable to get it resolved. If I wanted partially working, temperamental hardware, with tech support unable to resolve the problem, I would have stayed in the PC world.

Count me in people. This is pathetic. Have been a long-time apple user. No more. Will not buy another apple product unless I see some support on this issue, otherwise what guarantee do I have that future purchases won't malfunction and then be ignored.
Anyone know how to file a complaint/bug report with apple? I will happily file several hundred.

I used this webpage to provide feedback http://www.apple.com/feedback/
There is no dedicated area to feedback on displays so I did it under the MacPro section as that is my computer. The more people that send feedback the better - but there is no automatic response by Apple to the feedback - the information is logged and one would hope acted upon.

I find it odd that no one is mentioning which operating system they are running on. I strongly feel that this is an OS issue, and not necessarily a monitor issue. In which case, (I would like to think), that it will be resolved soon. I just purchased the monitor Wednesday and lost sound Thursday which is quite frustrating! BUT...I am a photographer and as far as the quality of the monitor it is breathtaking hands down. The whole speaker/camera bonus to me are just that...a bonus. Monitors are meant to be looked at not heard!! Haha, couldn't resist. That being said, this problem needs to be fixed and i am sure will be fixed. But unfortunately the coding required to fix this is probably somewhat elusive. And I do strongly feel that this is a software issue and not a hardware issue. Otherwise the unplug fix wouldn't work. Everyone just relax a little, and just be thankful that they are finally offering a monitor of this caliber for a grand. If people were complaining about the visuals, that would be one thing. But this thing is gorgeous. Don't hate! All will be fixed:). Written for my iPhone so if auto correct did anything funny... I'm sorry. Haha
