My apologies for posting about an issue that has already been covered but I think it is important to highlight what seems to be a pervasive issue with this otherwise awesome display.
Like others, mine worked b-e-a-utifully out of the box. A few days into it however, the sound stopped. I have tried the "unplugging for 15 seconds" trick and it is a temporary fix. I also tried, at the suggestion of Apple Supports, restarting the computer and holding down the command, option, "r" and "p" keys simultaneously until you hear two beeps. That is also a temporary fix.
I want to echo the advise to call Apple Support every time this happens to ensure this issue gets the attention it deserves.
Apart from this very annoying issue, this is one sweet display. I watched Avatar on it the first night just to test it out. I only intended to watch a few minutes but ended up watching the whole thing. Terrific! Of course that was when the sound worked.
I trashed /Library/Preferences/com.apple.BezelServices.plist and restarted.
However, the old com.apple.BezelServices.plist and the newly created com.apple.BezelServices.plist
are identical. So it is unlikely the procedure will solve the problem..
Thanks everyone for this post.
Mac Pro, new out of the box, everything fine.
Then suddenly, two weeks later, no sound.
At all.
No iTunes, no alerts, no nothing.
I thought it was to do with installing a whole bunch of Audio Instruments and updating the various software installers, so I'd tried numerous restarts / shut downs to no avail.
Thanks to this link, I tried the unplug/disconnect , leave alone, approach, and it's all fine again.
Not ideal, but working.
Hope Apple are going to address this. Not very impressed.
Just another data point... Mac Pro 3,1 and 27" Cinema; no sound after sleep some of the time; I've tried most of the suggestions in this thread and no permanent fix. I called apple support, got a new monitor, and still have the same issues. I just unplug it and plug it back in and it works for awhile.
It's pretty **** stupid for them to keep RMA'ing monitors without fixing them; maybe we should all buy stock in FedEX and keep RMA'ing them???
Adding my name to this thread.
MacbookPro5,2 connected to Cinema 27 Display. No extra USB devices plugged in. Works for a few days and then problem described in this forum occurs again. Already completed 1 call to Apple Support. They had me do a keystroke combination during boot up to clear something ( sorry for the lack of technical detail here). This worked for a few days but did not permanently resolve the issue. It seems that unplugging the USB display cable for a while accomplishes the same fix. Great display aside from this annoying sound issue.
So, I just got off the phone after a 45 minute conversation, where I actually got to speak with one of the gentleman that is directly dealing with this issue. I have all of his contact info and have no reason to believe that he was lying to me. He said, that it is going to be a firmware update, and that he was hoping it was going live today but that it is "close". So my suggestion would be for everyone to sit tight for a bit, and hopefully one morning soon we will be greeted with permanent working sound for this gorgeous display.
And to all the haters out there...No, I do not work for apple.
that's awesome. i believe it does need a firmware update as a software update won't fix the same problem it has in bootcamp/windows. glad to hear, i can't wait:) waiting to use the full functionality of this monitor
I unplugged the monitor, plugged it back in, deleted the file com.apple.BezelUIServer and restarted. Sound and volume keys worked fine for me. Today, the sound went out again. I also have these errors in my Console. I checked console right after I came back to my system and noticed the sound is out.
I first got this last night RIGHT after my sound went out:

I also see these errors today, but do not know if it's related to the audio cutting out.

I trashed /Library/Preferences/com.apple.BezelServices.plist and restarted.
Sound was ok.
Next morning, when I wake up the Mac from sleep, the sound was gone.
So, deleting some preferences files seems not to resolve the issue.
I have the 27" Cinema Display with the most recent 12-core Mac Pro. Everything is about a month old. Today I had to restart the computer several times because the display would not wake up from the sleep mode. (Not much help from Apple - zapped pram and ran disk utility/Repair Disk Permission - with apparently no luck - it just did it again.) I will call again tomorrow and waste another hour or so.
So far this month I've had to resolve two problems with the sound. First, 'no sound' was fixed by zapping the pram. The second problem was a flickering issue with the video AND audio. So far that has also been resolved by replacing the graphics card (we thought it was one of the mini ports). If it makes anyone feel any better, THIS Mac is a replacement for my 2-year old Mac Pro, Duo Quad 2.8ghz which kept shutting down on me. What is going on with Apple?
Can you give us the contact information? I need to let this person be aware of additional symptoms other than just the Sound. (My Sleep mode is going comatose - not waking up. This is after I resolved two different types of sound issues in the last month.)
Unfortunately I have the same issue (with this otherwise wonderful display). Sound does not work occasionally and volume control feedback is extremely slow in these cases. Frequency of issue is increasing, at the beginning every 2 weeks about, now nearly daily. It's really disturbing. Only solution is to disconnect the Displayport and the USB connector for about 1 minute.
I am also having this problem. I have had it for several months, although mysteriously it went into a remission for the plast ~2 months and just started up again. I have installed the 1.0 software update a long time ago. Randomly sound will not work through my 27" LED Cinema Display. I think it always happens after my computer is being woken up from a sleep. When I hit volume up or down on my keyboard there will be a several second delay before the display shows that the volume was changed. Unplugging the USB and the Mini DisplayPort will sometimes fix the problem, sometimes not. Sometimes I have to restart the computer.
Also of note the System Preferences > Sounds > Output window does NOT have the "LED Cinema - DisplayPort" line that that the software update 1.0 for this monitor is supposed to have. It did not have it while the bug was actively in effect and is also does not have it right now even though the sound is working. I am not sure if it ever has said "LED Cinema - DisplayPort" since I did the update, I can't remember.
At the recommendation of some people who posted to this forum, I just called Apple Tech Suport to make this issue more known so that a real fix could be eventually made. They captured a bunch of info from my computer, said they "escalated" my problem, and that they would call me back in a week. They guy I spoke to saw there were a lot of posts about this issue -- so everyone should keep it up!
I have the first generation 15" unibody MacBook Pro. It is always connected to my 17" LED Cinema Display with both USB and DisplayPort.
O/w this is an awesome monitor and I love it, but this problem is really annoying.
You won't have the 'LED Cinema - DisplayPort' line visible because this form of output is only supported by 2010 models - all models prior to 2010 can only output sound via the USB connection.
