Q: 27" Cinema Display Sound Issues

My apologies for posting about an issue that has already been covered but I think it is important to highlight what seems to be a pervasive issue with this otherwise awesome display.

Like others, mine worked b-e-a-utifully out of the box. A few days into it however, the sound stopped. I have tried the "unplugging for 15 seconds" trick and it is a temporary fix. I also tried, at the suggestion of Apple Supports, restarting the computer and holding down the command, option, "r" and "p" keys simultaneously until you hear two beeps. That is also a temporary fix.

I want to echo the advise to call Apple Support every time this happens to ensure this issue gets the attention it deserves.

Apart from this very annoying issue, this is one sweet display. I watched Avatar on it the first night just to test it out. I only intended to watch a few minutes but ended up watching the whole thing. Terrific! Of course that was when the sound worked.

I too have the same problem, I run all the procedures that Apple asks me to do but after a while the volume of the cinema display does not respond in the right way. Help!

I have the same problem, and in my opinion the only solution is return the defective product.
If the divine Apple (after the iphone 4 antenna problem) refuse not only a fix solution but also a reasonable answere, is simple warranty question: return the defective product and claim the price.

I should've returned it, but did not before the 14 day window. I thought the problem would be fixed with a firmware update, as they usually are. But this time, it looks to be a bigger issue.

I do not feel like I'm limited with 14 day window for returning it. If they do not fix it, I probably return it right before 1 year warranty expires for full refund.

I filed support claim, they are "working" on it (though completely ignoring my emails). I'm waiting while they working. Why I would not be able to return (or repair) defective display while it is covered by warranty? Otherwise would be too easy for them to cheat and delay any resolution out of 14 day window and then say "sorry, it is too late now. enjoy as it is"

Am I getting it wrong? Should I put away common sense and read what Apple lawyers put in the warranty statement instead?

I really don't know. I haven't heard of returning a product after a return window has closed even if it's defective. They need to fix it and will replace it, but I doubt a return for a full refund is even possible.

Sure they have an option to replace it with one that is not defective. Well, that'll fix that for me too. I used to get full refund for discontinued products while still on warranty because vendor could not fix it or replace with similar one. Just need to ask.

... unless they are out of business by the moment. But seems like I still have enough confidence despite our pain

Interesting... I'm hoping for a fix. Monitor look fantastic, just hope they can sort out the audio issues.

    Hardware or software issue ??

Why not have a try, just play songs in iTunes (one application only) overnight (or even longer) ? If we do not see the problem, then it is clearly a software issue which can be solved by a firmware update, isn't it ?

I have an impression that the problem may caused by an application or software.

I´m having the same sound issues. Only unplugging the display works but having to do this at least once a day (especially my MBP was in sleep mode) starts to be annoying (especially when you have to re-arrange all the open windows in expose). I do customer presentations with the display and these kind of technical problems are not a good reputation for the Apple brand.
A display - as nice as it is - for this price should work perfectly. I hope that someone at Apple will stand up and declare that there is an issue and how it´s going to be fixed. I´m thinking of returning my new display and getting an other one (or may be 2 from an other brand for the same price;)

No sound on my new Cinema Display either. I can simply unplug the usb and plug it back in to temporarily work around the issue and sound is restored for some period. This is clearly an issue Apple; get on it.

Darren, I have no heat from the top of my 27" after 8 hours of use at 66% brightness.

    The problem is back.
It was gone for a few weeks.
I was almost hoping the hard reboot the support guy had me do had solved the problem.
    But no.

I should take my monitor to the Apple Store...

    Hi All

As a brand new ACD 27" owner (hooked up to a MB Pro 15") I am also seeing sound issues. Pulling the power out for 30 seconds or so seems to solve it when it happens, but climbing over the desk every time is going to get old fast.

OTOH, for software development this is brilliant. My first two apps where written exclusively on the MacBook, I am almost at a loss with what to do with all of this glorious real estate.

Hey guys - a possible clue. I have my iPhone and an apple keyboard plugged into the USB ports on the back of the display. I would have the problem occur at least once a day.

However, for the last few days I haven't plugged in my iPhone, and I've also not woken the computer from sleep using the keyboard (used a bluetooth mouse instead). Since doing this, I haven't seen the problem.

What I'm wondering is, since the problem seems to be USB-related, perhaps not using the USB ports on the monitor helps the problem. It's worth a shot in any case - let us know how it works for you.

Hopefully I didn't jinx it by posting here.
