Apple TV not showing on my Itunes?

I have been using a 1st generation Apple TV with my Mac via Itunes for about 18 months with no problem. Today however Apple TV is not showing in my devices on Itunes? I have the latest software downloaded on both Itunes & Apple TV and i have checked all the settings on my Apple TV and the wireless internet is set up & working and showing good signal strength.

Does anyone know what i need to do to get Itunes to recgonise my Apple TV again? In the prefernces on Itunes it does not even show Apple TV on the devices? I have not deleted it but today it was not showing!

Any advise please!
Andy

Back again!

I've now also realised that Intego VirusBarrier X6 Firewall (even though it was set to allow everything) was blocking ATV1.

I've just removed Intego and my ATV1 now shows up if I use WiFi and/or wired network.

Can anyone else confirm if they also use Intego VirusBarrier (I use X6 version)? If so, can you try removing (remember to deauthorise before uninstall) even if it is set to No Restrictions and post the results?

Thanks,

Apple TV 1st Generation

iTunes 10.5.2

Had the same issue of ATV not appearing in iTunes.

I was able to solve by enabling Home Sharing on ATV.

- Go into Apple TV menu

- General/Computers

- Enable Home Sharing

(at this point ATV appeared in iTunes)

- Enter code that appears in ATV into ATV listed in the device section of iTunes

Then I was able to sync no problem.

I've had this problem a couple times over the past 2 years. Very frustrating issue when the devices just worked perfectly fine the day before. Anyway the solution is to re-pair the AppleTV with the computer again:

How to connect to a paired computer

  1. On the Apple TV, open the Settings > Computers.
  2. Highlight Add iTunes Library and click ok to continue.
  3. The Apple TV (1st generation) generates a unique passcode. Make a note of the passcode.
  4. Go to your computer and open iTunes on the paired computer.
  5. Select Apple TV in the Devices list and enter the passcode.
  6. Then name your Apple TV, if not already named, to complete the connection to your paired computer.

There are a number of reasons why this may occur, but fixes for most cases can be seen in the guide at the link below.

If you use Intego VirusBarrier X6, your connection to Apple TV may be blocked (usually because VB previously detected a "flood" attack involving ATV). This means Apple TV will not appear under Devices in iTunes. (Historically, Intego software has been very unobtrusive, so this is unusual.) The solution is to update VirusBarrier X6 to the latest version, then click on the Antivandal Tab, then the 'Trusted Addresses' tab. Finally, click on 'Trust Apple TV' checkbox near the bottom of the application window. You may need to restart iTunes.

Unfortunately, at this time, this solution may also fail. In that case, follow these steps to manually "trust" Apple TV:

First, revert VirusBarrier X6 to it's default settings:

-Select 'VirusBarrier X6' in the top-left menu bar of your screen.

-Choose Preferences from the drop down menu

-Click the Advanced icon in the new window that appears.

-Now click 'Revert to Default' and enter your admin user password.

Now, follow these steps to allow access to the Apple TV:

To locate your Apple TV's IP address:

-Go to the Settings menu on Apple TV

-Select General

-Select Network

Now, make note of your Apple TV's IP address.

Now, open your VirusBarrier X6 software:

-Select the AntiVandal icon

-Click on the 'Trusted Addresses' tab

-Click the small '+' sign in the lower left corner of the application window

(you may need to click the small padlock icon to allow changes)

-Enter the IP address from your Apple TV

-Click 'Okay'

Test to see if you're able to connect to your Apple TV.

You guys are doing the wrong thing. You cannot get your AppleTV to reconnect from your computer. You must initiate the request from the AppleTV, with the AppleTV connected to your TV. Therefore put away your computer and bring out your AppleTV Remote!

On your AppleTV (Connected to the TV)

  1. On the Apple TV, using the AppleTV remote, select Settings menu and then Computers.
  2. Highlight Add iTunes Library and click ok to continue.
  3. The Apple TV (1st generation) generates a unique passcode. Make a note of the passcode.

From your Computer:

  1. Go to your computer and open iTunes on the paired computer.
  2. Select Apple TV in the Devices list and enter the passcode.
  3. Then name your Apple TV, if not already named, to complete the connection to your paired computer.

You will have to resync your collection, but that is a smaller price to pay to get it reconnected to your computer.

I forgot to merntion, if the AppleTV is showing that it is connected with the computer, you will need to disconnect it from the computer. This wil aso require your enire library to be resync'd...

You should turn off syncing by using your Apple Remote to adjust the following:

On your AppleTV (Connected to the TV):

  1. From Apple TV’s main menu, select Sources.
  2. Select the link for your computer and select Disconnect.

Then reconnect to the computer:

Sorry to hear that. Try to relpace the battery for the remote. Otherwise, you will need to use your Apple Remote, or if you have an iPodTouch, iPhone or iPad, then download the AppleRemote App and use its "Control" option to navigate the AppleTV menu on your TV.
