remove shortcut arrows from dock?

I decided to make my dock a little neater by creating a folder and putting a bunch of app aliases in there, and putting this folder on the dock as a stack. But now every app in that stack has the shortcut arrow on it. Is there any way to get rid of the shortcut arrows?

I've done a bit of Googling and I see know there's a way to do it globally, but that will get rid of all shortcut arrows on all aliases on my computer, which isn't what I want. Can I manually remove it from just these aliases? Or, even better, set something so arrows never show up on the dock?

I even tried making a Unix link, but the shortcut arrow still shows up.

Mac Mini 4,1 + MacBook 4,1, Mac OS X (10.6.4), 4GB RAM (both), 1.5 TB and 500 GB externals

I really don't think so.

Within the folder on the dock you have aliases, files which point to the location of the actual app or file or whatever. The image for the alias type of files is created by an image (defaulting to the same as the original but which can be changed by you) and an overlay of the little black arrow by the system.

-Select an alias and choose get info from the file menu.
-In the top left corner of the get info window click on the mini icon.
-Select edit-cut and the icon will be removed.
-Select edit-paste you can replace it or paste in any other image.

As you can see from this example the little black arrow overlay is present regardless. The information you've found on removing it for the whole system is likely removing that icns file from the system resources.

I think you are going to have to be content with looking at the little arrows which are actually helpful as they distinguish between files and their aliases.

edit: a workaround would be writing your own scripts to call the applications but this is resource intensive compared to a simple alias.

One way that I can think of is a bit slow and painstaking, but if you think its worth it, it would most likely work. One thing you could do is the following:

1) find the application and its alias in Finder.
2) Press Command+i for both the application and its alias.
3) Click on the icon preview (at the top left of the "get info" window) from the actual application, and press Command+C to copy it.
4) Click on the icon preview for the alias and press Command+V to paste it.

If that doesn't work, you probably won't be able to do it since the addition of an arrow onto an alias is programmed and integrated in OSX software.

There is a way to remove those shortcut arrows, not individually, but all of them. I had rid my mac of them until recently when I mistakenly restored my system icons, including the arrows. Of course, I don't remember what I did (which brought me to this forum) but I am almost certain it involves going into the terminal. I will post when I get it figured out again.

Whoops, never mind, I now see that you want to selectively hide the arrows. SFWYT (sorry for wasting your time 🙂
