Snow Leopard Finder Icons Position

Hi!

Sometimes, when i restart the OS the system arrange the icons positions on the left side of the screen...
I have a lot of icons (using two monitors) and this thing is very, very unpleasant!

Anyone solved this problem?

The genius tech's don't have a clue...

View menu -> View Options. Click on Arrange by, some order you like. If you don't give it an arrange by, it will default to the best arrangement it can guess for the number of icons you have.

Hi!

The problem isn't in the menu/option, it seems that when you connect external discs (USB or Firewire) and restart the machine, the icons on the desktop are rearranged by the system itself losing the initial position used by the owner of the account.

If tried some tips found in the web but didn't solve the problem.

Nah, they definitely shouldn't do that, no matter how many drives you plug in/unplug.

You've probably got a corrupt .DS_store file.

Type/paste the following in Terminal, hit enter after each line:

cd Desktop/
rm .DS_store

Reboot and retry.

Hi!

Nope, didn't work.

After mount usb/firewire external disks the problem persist.

This problem has been reported since the first version of Snow Leopard...

Any tips?

Is there an arrange by selected? If there is none, the system will choose a random configuration whenever it feels like it, if there are more icons than a certain number.

Try that : arrange your icons the way you want them to be, then go to menu: fiew - clean up .
Works for me, icons stay where I put them last .

If you really want to force you desktop icons into specific positions you might want to take a look a DIM.

Hi!

No specific order... it's strange, the system can clean up the icons voluntarily after mount external disks? Hum...

I didn't know that the age of the spiritual machine has begin... LOL

...sound like bug...

Where is it going to put the drive icon that just mounted? Certainly not on top of an existing one. Actually Mac OS 9 did just that, and it even tried to keep all hard drive icons on the upper right. Surely this is a little better.

Try a test user, see if the issue persists there. If it does, there's something up with Finder as a whole, or the external. If it happens with every external disk, you could try an archive/install or reapplying the most recent combo update...if anyone has a second opinion on this, I'm grasping at straws.
