Q: Capturing Audio from an Audio Cassette

i'm trying to capture some audio from an old audio cassette using a canopus advc110
i have the audio out from the cassette player to the audio inputs on the canopus and firewire out of the canopus into my computer
capture window claims to see the device but i can't hear anything and there's nothing showing on the audio meters
device control is set at: firewire ntsc
capture input is set at: dv ntsc 48 kHz
am i missing a step?

Make sure the Canopus is working in the right direction. (Analog > FireWire), use the button to switch.
Set the device control to Non controlable device.
Then in the Capture window go to the second tab and choose Preview audio.

You can capture the audio with Capture Now.

Can you not hear anything from the cassette deck's speaker? "Audio out" from the deck should not disable the speaker.

Are all dip switches on the Canopus set right?
    Check the manual.
I'm not sure, but it might need some video source as well.
Can you conect a videocamera or so to the video input of the canopus?

on my particular deck which is an old boombox, audio out is a headphone jack and does disable the speaker
i usually have it connected to external speakers and the audio out works fine

    here's the answer:
on the canopus, the digital reference switch (#1) should be on/'fixed'
