iMac G5 20" monitor looks flakey

iMac G5 20" monitor looks flakey

I have an iMac 20" G5 (not isight) and the monitor has suddenly gotten lines the entire length of it.

Is anyone familiar with the cause? Link to a screenshot is below.

If you have iMac G5 with ATI -graphics card they usually "die" that way, the chip becomes detached from the motherboard and the only way to fix or attempt to fix it would be to reball it ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97nxZwHG5bA). In some cases it could also be capacitors but that issue is more common with FX5200 -models.

You are right i does not seem to be the same as the 17" issue which is why I started a new thread. before I drive all the way to an Apple repair place I want to obtain as much info as possible to know whether it is even worth repairing.

I am pretty sure they charge pretty much for repairs or maybe suggest a replacement motherboard which will cost ridiculously much. I think the cheapest and the only reasonable priced method will be to try repair it by yourself or let a friend do it.

But lets hear what they have to say.

The problem ended up being the video component that is known to go on the 20" 1st gen G5.

Since I pointed out that this was the 3rd G5 of mine to run into serious problems in a matter of weeks Apple repaired the machine at no cost. It took a couple days but it is back and good as new.
