Song capacity of 60G IPod and 20G IPod

I have a 60GB IPod with 517 songs now loaded (approx. 4 minutes per song) and have only 40.2GB still available. My wife has a 20GB IPod with the same songs and has only 3.1GB still available. It seems highly unlikely that my IPod can hold the advertised 15,000 songs or that my wife's IPod and hold the advertised 5,000 songs, or anything close. Perhaps there should be some allowance for the operating system but, even so, the advertised cpacity seems greatly exaggerated. Am I missing something?

No but what can affect the size adn capacity of the ipod is how large each song file is. What is each song size. Ive encoded all my music in the AAC format at 128. If your song files are mp3 and are aboce 128 then sure the memory of the ipod willb e decreased because the songs are so huge. Which they really dont ned to be. I found that songs formated in AAC and at 128 is just great for my songs.

Billyboy, if your songs are imported in an uncompressed format such as WAV or Apple Lossless, GFF is right, the file sizes are huge. The average 4 minute song imported in AAC@128 is approximately 4mb. I imported in AAC @ 256 for better audio quality & my file size for a for 4 minute song is about 7-8mb. In comparison, a 4 minute song imported in Lossless is going to be about 20-25mb.

i hate how apple says you can fit a certain amount of songs on the ipod, it gives people the wrong impression.

Apple's estimates for song capacity is almost perfectly accurate. They specifically indicate that their estimates are based on tracks encoded at 128kbps AAC files of about 4 minutes each. I don't see how you would get the wrong impression.
There's nothing misleading about their estimates if you read and understand how they arrived at the estimates.

Andrey, when Apple quotes a certain capacity for any iPod, that capacity is based on the average 4 minute song imported in AAC @ 128kbps. You, as the user, have the option to change the import options in iTunes to conform to you audio requirements. Apple doesn't dictate how you import your music into iTunes, therefore Apple really can't quote you a capacity for evey available importing format.
