WiFi Greyed out

I'm not able to get onto WiFi anymore. If I go to settings and Wi-Fi it's greyed out. I'm not able to join any network. I already reset my phone to factory settings and it still doesn't work. I've also tried to update my phone on Itunes but I get..

"There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone "Angelina's iphone". The network connection timed out.

Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later.

I've tried 5 times. It's frustrating.

Anyclue?
Thanks.

Greyed out WiFI usually means a hardware failure requiring replacement. This is certainly the case if your restored the phone in iTunes as a new iPhone (without using a backup) and it failed to fix it. Don't know what you mean by " reset to factory settings" - please use correct terminology.

If you're having trouble updating or restoring as you describe, disable all firewall and antivirus/spyware apps on your computer.

None of this applies if you've jailbroken or hacked your phone. In that case, sol.
