Reformat and restore Mac without CD?

I would like to reformat my Mac, restore it to its original settings as I am having issues with a lot of applications. They randomly become unresponsive. Unfortunately I have misplaced the OS CD that I had received with it. Is there anyway I can restore it without using the CD? If I have to purchase the CD again how do I do so?
