Logic 9.1.2 HT Quad i7 performance solution!

Just got that from AppleCare:

They are aware of the performance problem on certain machines in certain setups and working on a solution. However you can enable the virtual cores on all Quad Core machines with this commandline in Logic 9.1.2!

Open Terminal.app from /Applications/Utilities and copy the following line into the window and press return:

defaults write com.apple.logic.pro MD_AllowVirtualCoresQuad -bool yes

You can then quit Terminal.app. Relaunch Logic and you should have twice the number of processing threads.

Warning: this preference can actually lower your performance or have a negative impact on stability (e.g. you get audio engine overloads). In this case you can disable it by using the following line in Terminal.app:

defaults write com.apple.logic.pro MD_AllowVirtualCoresQuad -bool no

No, not just quad core. All machines started to dogpile in. It is a hyper threading issue. So if your machine supports HT then it is your issue as well. Performance seems to be somewhat erratic on the benchmark I get sometimes 110-125 Tracks depending on reboot and launch states. Logic is still not scaling perfectly but it is very much improved.

Mike - so does 9.1.2, with whatever necessary options enabled, completely satisfy your long-standing gripes about multicore performance now? In other words, is it all good for you now?

I want to test it more, but so far it has been a vast improvement in performance and stability has been just fine. Assuming it stays this stable in regular use, I'm extremely happy with it.

So what's this mean for folks looking to buy a new Mac for Logic? Is the increase in functional cores enough to put the new 2.4 octo ahead of the 3.2 quad? Is the hex now a better option?

There should be plenty of benchmarks being done (if they haven't already). The hex should be faster than the 2.4 octo, hard to say about the 3.2 quad. I got my 2.4 octo up to 112 tracks on the benchmark.

So at this point do we know for sure either way if this helps on the i7 laptops?

Mike, since you’ve been leading the charge on this I’m taking that as authoritative as it gets. It now sounds like any of the new Mac Pro lineup ought to run Logic efficiently. This is a win for Logic users, music, this forum … and Apple itself … at least one customer frozen in the midst of transitioning to the Mac from the ‘dark side’ can now make that commitment with confidence. Thanks again to you, Blueberry, AppleCare, the developers, and the others who made this happen. To have a happier ending, we’d have to be pulled out of a hole in the ground in Chile… 😉

One thing I did find out - looks like the 12 core machines only use 16 cores after changing that setting instead of all 24. So it looks like apple still has some work to do, but at least it seems like things are heading the right direction.

Logic 9.1.2 HT Quad i7 performance solution!
