My ipod deleted EVERYTHING! please help.

I had my ipod plugged in to charge. As I was listening to it, something weird happened and all of a sudden it says that it can't read my ipod & told me if I was having issues to restore it! Problem is I have over 6000 songs! So now my iPod has NO music or videos but it says when I turn on the iPod that I have 41.1GB used/70.1GB free. Is there any hope for my iPod to get my music back/show up?

I'm using the new MacBook Pro.

I've had exactly the same problem, although the deletion happened because I tried to play my iPod through my friend's lap to (an old Compaq running windows xp and iTunes 9) which promptly deleted my iPod as soon as I plugged in.

The error message said - "I-Tunes can not read the contents of i-Pod "name", go to the summary tab in i-Pod preferences to restore this i-Pod to factory settings"

I wasn't sure whether to do this so I closed the window (pressing "X" rather than "ok", and ejected my i-Pod, first clicking on the eject button to the right of my device icon on the left hand column in i-Tunes). when I switched on my i-pod, everything had gone.

I have collected music manually from various sources over the years, on-line audio lecture sites, fiend's i-tunes libraries, my library, burned from CDs etc. Usually there is an option to connect manually (which I thought would present itself once I connected on this occasion) but instead it just erased everything as soon as I plugged in. I've noticed that Macs don't do this, but rather default to the manual setting. The lap top I connected to is an old Compaq using an old version of i-Tunes which I guess is set up to sync automatically.

I'm still hoping that the music is on my iPod as about 10GB of memory is being taken up inexplicably (under "other" memory). Do you think this might be the case or is the 10GB usage some kind of relic from the old memory?

I'd really appreciate your help

I thought you were intendingto start a new thread. It'll probably give you more help than adding to existing ones. If you do decide to start a new thread, go here; http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1208&start=0 and select *Post new topic* just above the table of posts.

Anyway, presumably, the 10GB of space being used on your iPod is listed as Other. I think, from what you've said about your friend's version of iTunes and so on that your iPod has become corrupted. The only way (that I know of) out of this is to connect it to your iTunes and Restore it, from the Summary pane.

For future reference, iPods can only be Synced with one library and I think the default is that iTunes will automatically detect an iPod connected to it and perform a Sync. Even if it isn't, connecting it to someone else's iTunes, especially if their version is older than yours is never a good idea. If your iPod has been Synced with iTunes 10, or it has a version of the iPod software that requires something newer than the other computer has, you can almost guarantee problems if you plug it into the older machine.

To answer the question you asked someone in the other thread you joined, we're fellow users, not Apple employees. Ocassionally, Apple employees do contribute to threads (they have an Apple icon in the poster information on the left), but it is only ocassionally. The volume and diverstity of issues posted on these forums mean that users are better suited to helping each other out while Apple employees watch, learn and if required, then (behind the scenes), they fix any issues with their software.

Hopefully, you're going to confirm that you have all your music and videos still on your MacBook. However, before anything else, try resetting the iPod.

A reset is performed by turning the Hold switch on then off again and then press-and-hold the Menu and Select (centre) buttons until the Apple logo appears. It could then take about two minutes before the iPod is ready to go again.

If a reset doesn't cure the problem, the a Restore (with iTunes) is the next step, which is why you hopefully have everything still in your iTunes library. The Restore will remove everything from your iPod and then put it back again using the contents of the library.
