Set up of Second Screen

Two new 27" Apple Monitors attached to my Mac Pro and both working fine with one bothersome exception. The right screen is my main screen with the dock and drives and files all available and visible with the selected choice of a desktop photo. The left screen IF mirrored would reflect or mirror the right screen IF so selected in the Display window of System Preferences. HOWEVER, I wish to choose a different background for the left screen which is in fact the extended desktop. The left screen shows the Apple generic Outer Universe Screen and I want to change it to something else. Although the choices are evident and selectable, I am unable to effect the change I want.
Will very much appreciate your assistance.
Regards
Ron

Hi,

Firstly you can put what ever program you want on the second screen by having it in presentation mode and just dragging the program to the screen however your desktop on the screen will be the same as the other...

Second, interested in having 2 external screens out of my Mackbook Pro... is it possible?? I was thinking a cable from mini dvi and a cable out of mini display port??

If you have the displays mirrored, I would not expect that you can give them separate backgrounds.

If, on the other hand, they are not, then you should, through the +Desktop and Screensaver+ panel in +System Preferences+, be able to select whatever background you wish — whether from those standard in an OS X install or custom backgrounds you have created or downloaded.

Have I understood your issue?

I agree if mirrored, must be same background.
I understand how new and differing background can be set when not in mirroring mode.
The problem I had with the extended second monitor ... It was when these two monitors, out of the box, were set up and connected for the very first time. The generic universe screen was displayed and all normal ways of changing to my choice were futile ... Only when I logged out did the change options work.
Hope this is clear..
