FaceTime works but only with headset

FaceTime worked normally before I left the US, but now that I'm in Europe, my wife and I can connect easily with good video, but I get extremely low volume unintelligible audio with a lot of static unless both of us are using headsets. She can hear me clearly with or without a headset, but again, I can't hear her. Is there a logical reason for this or any setting adjustment I can make to eliminate the need for the headset?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I don't know of any logical reason, but here are a couple of things you can consider.

(1) Have you tried the slider in *Settings > Sounds* and the volume buttons on the iPhone?

(2) If your wife uses a "skin" protective bumper case, be sure it is not covering her mic.

Both suggestions came from this thread whose original poster finally decided to return his device (iPod in this case) for service or exchange:

Thanks for the ideas, EZ Jim.

You're most welcome, John!

Plenty to think about in that link, too. I'm sure it's not a slider/volume control issue, but I'll have to ask her if she has a bumper or other case obstructing the mic. Most of the other troubleshooting tips were covered in that other discussion.

Case obstructing the mic was there, too,

We will watch for your status update.
