Apple TV (v2) displays subtitles too low on TV screen

Following some hints on the Apple Discussions, I was able to enable the subtitles on my DVD rip by changing the file extension to .m4v instead of .mp4, however when viewing the movies on the new Apple TV, they are too low on the bottom of the screen and get cut off.

Is this a bug in the Apple TV or is it something I can fix when doing a rip from Handbrake?

I found the same problem. Subtitles work fine on ATV but are too low on ATV2. This for my Handbrake-converted DVD-to-M4V files. Looks like a bug which I am sure Apple will fix.

I have the same issue. My wife is hearing impaired so I rip with the subtitles on. The subtitles display fine on our macs, iPhones, iPads, but they are pushed off the bottom of the screen on the apple TV 2.

I wonder if we are not ripping the DVD with the correct resolution, and the apple tv is stretching the video which pushes the subtitles off.

Let me know if you guys find anything out.

thanks!

You have to check the display settings of your TV.

Sometimes e.g. 16:9 is the wrong format and you have to set your TV to “overscan” or “scan only”. The best thing of course is to check all of the available settings and stick with the one which doesn’t cut of subtitles at the bottom.

And keep in mind that some TV’s are so stupid that they forget their settings when they go into standby mode.

If this is happening with iTunes Store material sounds as though something is amiss with AppleTV 2 or TV settings.

If however only 'home made' encodings with subtitles are affected I would suspect the problem is with the encoding.

You kind of need an official itunes purchased baseline to see.

Anyhow, if official material plays up, then:

I'm pretty sure this is not a TV issue but an AppleTV issue.

I ripped both 16:9 and 21:9 movies with subtitles and on both, the bottom line of the subtitle is missed off.

The AppleTV is sitting them too low so the second line is not displayed...

If I used subler and move the subs up this works fine on my macs but not surprisingly doesn't have an effect on the AppleTV - Apple need to make the subtitle bar either display 2 / 3 lines or allow it to be moved in terms of where it's positioned.

Regards,
John.
