Can't connect to newly downloaded skype 2.8 using OS X 10.6.4

I downloaded Skype 2.8 today on two of my Macs and am unable to connect.

I am running a Mac Mini 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory, OS X 10.6.4. and a Black Macbook 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, OS X 10.6.4. We connect to the internet via an Airport Extreme with 802.11n, firmware version 7.4.2. connected via ethernet to an ARRIS TM602G/CT cable modem with Comcast as my service provider. We are using the modem for our telephone service as well. (The laptop, obviously connects via wifi)

Error dialog box contains the following verbiage:

Can't connect to Skype.
Please check your network settings and try again

Do I need to do reconfigure anything in my Airport Extreme router to facilitate connection?
Do I need to use a proxy? If so please specify.
Is there a compatibility issue at play here with OSX 10.6.4 and Skype 2.8?
Does the fact that I'm using Comcast for my phone service have anything to do with this issue - eg. Comcast blocking skype connection?

Any tips, tricks, advice, any of you could throw my way would be greatly appreciated.

I've already submitted a ticket to skype support and am waiting to hear back.

Thanks for reading...

ps...I've already tried deleting the shared.xml file from the user>Library>Application Support>Skype folder and it didn't help...thanks.

FWIW I had this same problem today.

I turned my firewall (apple built in) (System Prefs-> Security) off and then back on. I made sure that Skype was one of the applications allowed to accept incoming connections.

I then made sure that Skype>Preferences>Advanced>Port has a value. I used 45000.

I then tried to login again and it worked.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I actually fixed the problem last night on my Mac mini and on the MacBook. On the Mac mini, since it was connected to my airport extreme base station by Ethernet... I had the airport option in my network settings toggles off. So...after having no luck trying any of the many suggested fixes from Skype support...I simply toggled on my airport connection and voila...I connected to Skype immediately. On my laptop I was still having a problem connected via airport do I went into my network settings on that computer and basically started to reconfigure my airport connection...cancelled out of it...toggled airport off then on again...and voila...I'm good to go! My problem seems solved!

After trying:
* turning firewall on and off
* changing the port
* deleting these files and reinstalling:
/Applications/Skype.app
/Users/~/Library/Preferences/com.skype.skype.plist
/Users/~/Library/Application Support/Skype

I downgraded to 2.7.0.330 and was able to connect! And then, after adding contacts and doing a few things, I quit Skype 2.7.0.330 and then launched Skype 2.8.0.851 from the Skype_2.8.0.851.dmg file, and it worked!!! I then trashed Skype 2.7.0.330 from my Applications folder, did NOT trash the other associated files, copied Skype 2.8.0.851 to the Applications folder and it launched and connected. Something fishy is DEFINITELY going on.

gallai's low-tech solution -- just keep trying -- worked for me. (Bless you, gallai!) I had tried various things without success (e.g., deleting shared.xml, changing port, turning firewall off and on, but not the big trashing scene or downgrading Skype that some recommend). Maybe it will work for you, too:

1. Try to sign in to Skype
2. If the arrows circle for more than 5-7 seconds, click cancel, because it's not going to work.
3. Try again (easy since skype name and password are still there)
4. Repeat until it works

It took about 8-9 tries before it worked for me. (Don't ask why, I guess.) Skype has started up on the first try every time (3-4 times) since then. I hope this works for others (and keeps working for me, too).

I tried gyandev's solution (keep trying 8-9 times) and after about 20 tries I still had no success.

So I want to try installing the old 2.7.0.330 version. But, I can't find anywhere on the Skype download pages where I can select an older version. How to I find version 2.7.0.330?

--------

Just found it at http://mac.oldversion.com/Skype.html

Installed 2.7.0.330 and now I am able to login.

There are a lot of voodoo solutions on various forums about this, such as reinstalling, messing with the firewall, etc.. I tried them all, the truth is, none of them helped.
I just kept trying to connect and eventually it worked. Just takes a long time and a few tries (about 5-6 in my case) but then it's all good.

You're dead right! It's a common fallacy: "I have problem A, I try solution B, problem A goes away, therefore solution B must have fixed problem A". Humans are superstitious by nature and tend to see causality where there is only a correlation of two unrelated events.

Back to Skype: I tried again, but this time just left it trying to connect and, after 15-20 minutes, it did eventually connect. Every subsequent time I have launched Skype, it connects immediately.

One explanation for this (and I'm purely guessing here) could be that this particular version of Skype creates a profile on their servers that combines your Skype login with one or more basic details about the actual computer you are connecting from. This sort of data would certainly help them with further development of the product. In fact, if you read their privacy policy, you'll find that they collect:

"(f) information about your usage of and interaction with the Skype software, our products and websites including *computer and connection information, device capability*, bandwidth, statistics on page views, and traffic to and from our websites;"

Perhaps this is what's going on as you log in with a fresh install of 2.8 and the servers that handle this part are currently overburdened, causing the delay?
