Ical Request Error - Authentication Failed

Hi,

We have a network with a snow leopard server running ical server and many ical clients.
As a rule things work well.

On a regular basis though, various users get the following error when they start ical:

"Request Error

Authentication of account [account name] failed.
Please check your login and password information."

And..... the error is repeated for EACH calendar that the user subscribes to!

The strange thing is, the login name and password ARE correct.
This can be proven by logging into the same server via Go>Connect to Server in the Finder.

I have had limited success by deleting the relevant entry in Keychain Access.

Sometimes I have to delete the Account (Preferences>Account) and then add it again.
That always works but the problem typically does come back days later.

Can anyone shed any light on why this is happening and if there is a permanent solution?

We get this too. One thing I've found that "fixes" it, is I start up Server Preferences, go to User accounts, and simply click on each user. Just clicking on the users seems to load or refresh something, and then logins work.

I sometimes have to do this a couple of times a day.

Next time this happens to your staff, can you try that, and report back if it fixes the problem?

Jamie,

Thank you so much for this tip.
It worked just fine!

Since ical users get the same error for EACH of the user calendars that they link to, the solution is more clearly stated thusly:
start up Workgroup Manager, go to User accounts, and click on each user that that the affected ical user links to.

The big question, is.....
What can we do to get Apple to really fix the problem?
OR
Is there something we can do to eliminate the problem at the server?

I don't know what we can do to get Apple to fix this, beyond us both reporting it with bugreporter. I guess two people reporting it adds a bit of weight to the problem.

Since clicking on the users "loads" them, I thought I had a work around with "dscl" listing user information, and wrote a script that I ran every 15 minutes that did that for each user

foreach n (`dscl localhost -list /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1/Users`)
dscl localhost -read /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1/Users/$n >> /dev/null
end

Unfortunately, that doesn't do the same as clicking on the user.

So I have no solution. I guess we can only hope Apple fix it in the next update, but I tend to find Server bugs take forever before fixing - I guess there just aren't enough of us using Server to warrant urgency.

I'm actually kind of glad I'm not the only one seeing this though. Because there are so few Server users it seems, when you hit a bug it often feels like it must be something you've done wrong.

Just to follow up, I've recently noticed that the problem is easily solved by clicking on all relevant users in the Workgroup Manager (strange as that sounds).
But.... is has still failed to work well for one user, and one user only.

For that user, when ical starts up, it give the Request error repeatedly.
We then get out of ical (which is hard without force quitting) and then do the click on all users in Workgroup Manager bit.
It typically takes many tries before it works though.
Anyone else have any ideas?
