New Apple TV loses connection to iTunes 10.0.1

The new Apple TV requires you to have your Mac or PC on all the time to access content. With home sharing on I am able to do this easily. However, after a certain time, the Apple TV simply "loses" the computer from the "Computers" list or, it just pinwheels forever. I thought I would be clever and set up a scheduled apple script to restart iTunes at 2AM thus refreshing the connection. This also doesn't seem to work. It would appear that I must restart both starting with the Apple TV first to get home sharing running proper again. It does this will ALL my iTunes instances I have tested. Internet and network never go down. Just the Home Sharing it seems.

Has anyone seen this problem or figured out a way to fix it?

Tried connecting via Ethernet - even more problems than WiFi. Set Energy saver to never let MBP go to sleep - still does not help. Updated firmware of Time Machine and AP Express - still not helping 😠

With this problem going on so long - it would appear that Apple is just ignoring the issue: as long as you restart the Apple TV and iTunes (or MacBook for that matter) who cares about the rest.

This sounds all too much like a Microsoft issue: just reset/restart and it will work again.😢

Come on Apple, I really expect so much more from you....

Edited: spelling

Yep. I'm right there with you all. I've owned AppleTVs for several years. They worked flawlessly for years. Then, iTunes 11. Now I have to restart iTunes on my always-on MacMini media server every few hours. Basically, any time I want to watch video content or listen to music.

I've written to Apple about this on several occasions -- no response of any kind.

I have 4x AppleTV (2nd gen), 2x MBP, 2x MacMini, 4x iPad (2x 1st gen, 1x 2nd gen, 1x Mini), Time Capsule, 3x Airport Express and several iPhones from gen 1 thru iPhone 5.

As a solid and longterm Apple customer who's bought into the "Apple Infrastructure" I feel *EXCEEDINGLY* burned. Can't get a support call, email -- anything -- from this compnay that stands behind the "just works" philosophy.

I'm tired of having to remote into the media server to restart iTunes. I'm sick that I have to tell my wife and / or kids to "wait while I go restart iTunes". My wife is already sick of using it at all.

Great job on iTunes 11 Assple. Oh, and excellent customer service.

I pretty much won't be buying any more of your stuff.

Just wanted to quickly update this thread for those who have encountered problems streaming from their Apple TV's to iTunes on their computers. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a 2011 Macbook Pro with iTunes 11.0.2.

This should work with Lion and Mountain Lion BUT I HAVEN'T TESTED IT ON THOSE OS's. Proceed at your own risk.

One more word of caution, Do not under any circumstances delete iTunes (where your music files are kept) located inside your Music folder. This is (seems to be) a problem with the iTunes program and it's supporting files, not the music library.

1. Back up your hard drive.

2. Download the Trial version of AppZapper and install the program.

3. Open AppZapper and drag the iTunes program from inside your applications folder and drop it on the AppZapper program box on your desktop.

4. You backed up your hard drive right?

5. Press the Zap button in the AppZapper window.

6. Go to apple.com and download a fresh copy of iTunes 11 and re-install it on your computer.

7. This new version of iTunes will/should automatically find your iTunes library in your Music folder.

8. Reset Home Sharing in iTunes using your Apple ID and Password.

Your streaming problems should be solved.

Using ATV2 with af Windows7 PC.

My iTunes needed to be restarted only once in a while - until it got so bad that it had to be restarted within 5 minuts of use ... We would be able to see a movie to end, but couldn´t stop and start a new movie.

Then read about a user - that found his problem to be the firewall - he was using AVG. I just use the

windows firewall and started checking out the settings. The setting was wrong - it said to be on a public network - I put it back on private network .. and voila ... haven´t had a problem since ... 🙂 .. Has been working great for a week now.

Maybe you guys should check out our firewall settings ?

I had issue 1: everything on my system works fine except iTunes on my mac cannot stream to the ATV3. I'm running an Apple-only system with the newest Airport Extreme router and airplay works fine from all my iOS devices. The ATV3 also works fine when it connects to my Mac from the ATV3 (homesharing works fine). But when using either Airplay mirroring or just sending to the ATV3 from iTunes, the connection is lost (I think after the ATV3 goes to sleep) and the only solution was a reboot of the ATV3.

I read everything in this thread and had no luck, but I did find a solid solution for my problem in another thread. Let me past it here. It's from the User Tesserax

One option to try that seems to resolve iTunes streaming with OS X Lion [and for me, Mountain Lion] is to disable IPv6. In previous versions of OS X, IPv6 was disabled by default. Not so in Lion and there is no option in the Network panel to do so.

However there is a method to do so using Terminal:

  • Applications > Utilities > Terminal
  • To determine what are all of your Mac's network interfaces are, issue the following command: networksetup -listallnetworkservices
  • To disable IPv6 for wireless, issue the following command: networksetup -setv6off Wi-Fi; to disable IPv6 for Ethernet, issue the following command: networksetup -setv6off Ethernet
  • To re-enable IPv6, use -setv6automatic instead

Immediately after turning off IPv6 in the terminal I was able to connect from iTunes to the ATV3.

Hi Jadea3,

I use MacBook Pro Mountain Lion. Apple TV.

I use Lynksys router E3200.

I also use Airport Express to join the network for AirPlay (music streaming to different room).

I read most of the comments in this thread. And I followed the recommendation as much as possibie i.e.:

  • Update Router Firmware
  • DHCP Reserve IP address for each my iDevice.
  • Disable IPv6 in my MacBook and Routers.
  • Off and back ON the home sharing
  • Dissable sleep in Apple TV
  • Restart everything (Mac, Router, Apple TV, Airport Express)
  • also, with additional information and actions setting up my router following the steps in here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4199.
  • Then restart everything again.

But the problem still there. the problem is the music keeps dropping. on and off every 1-2 minutes or even few seconds.

If I connect my iPhone directly to Aiport Express (via Router) to play music, the sound never drops.

the problem ONLY happens when the source of music is from MAC.

And the problem is only the MUSIC.

If I stream Movie from MAC directly to Apple TV (via Router) it never drops.

I have spent the entire day doing many things and experiments. I concluded that the problem ONLY happens when I use MAC to stream MUSIC.

So here is where the problem happens:

MAC -- Router -- Aiport Express and Apple TV (Music) --> Dropping!

MAC -- Router -- Apple TV (Music) --> Dropping!

iPhone -- Router -- Aiport Express (music) --> FINE!

Mac -- Router -- Apple TV (movie) --> FINE!

So what is the root cause here? anyone can help me please?

could it be the distance betweek MAC and the router?

could it be the router issue? (i doubt it, coz internet works fine)

Please help!

In addition to my post above,

I also have tried this:

iPhone -- Router -- Apple TV (Movie) --> FINE

iPhone -- Router -- Apple TV (mosic) --> FINE

I think now I know what is happenning here.

AirPlay Movies uses frame pre-download method (that's how I call it). it is almost like playing Youtube. it uses buffering, meaning: some amount of the frames are downloaded first before it plays it back. This method is to ensure the Apple TV has the proper amount ot files/frames to play the movie.

For some incident, if the download stops or not moving fast enough, obviously the movie will stop playing (like hang in the middle)

This is the best way today to stream movie over wireless network.

HOWEVER (correct me if I am wrong), Apple does not apply the same method for MUSIC (sound). It just pure STREAM. the device just play the music whenever it receives the TCP package.

And this is what is wrong with TCP/IP protocol.

TCP/IP uses packages to transmit data. It is like heartbeats. your heart flowing blood cells into the blood vessel.

but sometime the heartbeats do not sync. there are gaps between package.

the wider the gaps, some packages will be lost.

The receiver will receive the TCP package and encapsulate it. and then wait for the same codes of new package to arrive. then encapsulate it too.

So what happen if the next package is missing or the gap is too wide? the receiver will not be able to get the right code of next TCP package and it will wait until it decided to drop and receive whatever next package arrives.

While waiting, this is when we or I have been experiencing the music just goes off few seconds.

This is a design Flaw of AirPlay when we use it to play Music over IP network. It does not matter Wirelessly or using UTP cables.

It does not matter of the distance. I moved my Mac just 1 meter away from the Router, it does not affect anything.

So I hope Apple fix this issue by changing the method for MUSIC from pure STREAM to BUFFERING just like they have already done it for MOVIES over AirPlay.

Hope they read this and comment if I am wrong.

thanks for reading.
