Yes. This camera should work. You will need a Firewire cable. Depending on your Mac, you will have FW400 or FW800. IF you have FW400 get the 4 pin to 6 pin FW cable. If you have FW800, get the 4 pin to 9 pin FW cable. Finally, make sure your camera is plugged in to AC power, not batteries, when importing.

I am also trying to get video from the Sony DCR-HC40 to my MacBook. I have a cable that goes to the USB port. It plugs in. Why shouldn't it work?

As Appleman says - You need a Firewire cable to transfer the video - The USB cable is just for things like photo stills.

The camera will work fine, but you definitely need Firewire, and make sure you get the right one for your Macbook - Some have Firewire 400 ports and more recent machines have Firewire 800.

I too am having a problem.

I have the DCR-HC40 and the firewire cable. I hook the firewire cable to the camcorder and it seems as if my computer or iMovie doesn't recognize the 2 are hooked up together.

Any ideas?

Your DCR-HC40 must be in edit mode. This mode is located in the VCR portion of the camera settings. Check your manual.. Once you're in this mode, then you can import.

Sometimes though, the DCR-HC40 may cut its connection once in awhile -- not sure why it's happening. iMovie or iLink as one of my MiniDV (DCR-HC52) does it. However, when I use a standalone software called "Vidi" http://mitzpettel.com/, the problem disappeared!

Btw, the file saved is a Quicktime DV which you can import into iMovie.

Hi, i was wondering if you ever sorted this out? i have the same issue. I bought the firewire cable that fits the imac. It said it was up to 400, not an 800. Does that make a difference if you know?
