keyboard refuses to pair with bluetooth

hello. im having problems pairing my keyboard (aluminum wireless) with my macbook pro (unibody)

randomly today my magic mouse and my keyboard were no longer responding. after a handful of troubleshooting techniques i deleted both devices from my bluetooth preferences and then set them up again. the mouse has no problem, paired right away. they keyboard is found but when i go to pair, it tells me that pairing was unsuccessful (it does not prompt me to type in numbers to set the pair)

i have tried the following to no avail:

deleted preferences in bluetooth preferences.
delete com.apple.bluetooth.plist
restart machine
shut down machine
remove batteries from device
reset SMC
reset PRAM

does anyone have any ideas?
thanks.

macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Hello john:

It appears that you have already completed most of the troubleshooting steps I would have suggested.

Try one more thing. Delete the KB (in system preferences>bluetooth. Restart the computer. The BT assistant should begin trying to find the KB and then beginning the pairing process.

If that does not help, I suggest you take the KB in to an Apple store and have them try to pair it there (could be defective). Take along the troubleshooting steps you have tried for their review (and possible additional suggestions).

I'm suddenly having the same problem. And tonite my daughter called from NYC to tell me that her BT keyboard that came with her 27 iMac just stopped working as well. She says her mouse continues to be paired but she cannot get her KB to connect. Neither my magic mouse or KB will connect.

I will go through the drill that you tried and see if I have any luck. Have recharged batteries as she has. Restarted the computer. Deleted both the KB and mouse and let BT try anew. No luck. I've had months and months of perfect performance from both devices. She has had almost a year of success with her 27in. So why, in one week, would both of us have a similar problem? A seemingly extreme coincidence unless a recent software update has changed something.

I have the Holy Grail. At least I believe I do. We just bought a new wireless keyboard. It would locate the keyboard in BlueTooth but not "pair". We then spent all morning troubleshooting. We whined like babies... "What the...#@!$%! no way: an Apple product not working right out of the box? Impossible". Our first Mac was an Apple Plus. We're old... but not so wise, obviously.

We read page after page (on-line - forums, Apple support) and had no luck. Maybe we just missed it. There were "killer bunny's" along the path. We finally resorted to calling Apple. In 3 minutes we were typing on the new wireless Apple keyboard. Besides all the things you've read here and have tried, do this:

As soon as you get the prompt for the pass key number (or whatever it's called - you know, the blue digits with the return button at the end of the line), type in those vert numbers WITH YOUR NEW WIRELESS KEYBOARD and hit return. There's no menu or anything... just type them... have faith. Each time you type in a number, that digit will activate and you'll be prompted for the next one, etc. Then hit return. BAM.

"Only a flesh wound."

I had same problem - all of a sudden both wireless keyboard and mouse stopped working. Sometimes they would be found, sometimes not but I couldn't get them to pair at all.

Tried all the usual stuff - batteries, reboot, delete plist file etc

Eventually reset the SMC and PRAM and voila!

I think it was the SMC that did it. You can google for instructions.

Good luck
