iphone 4 not connecting to pc

my new iphone 4 will not connect to pc or itunes. I plug in the usb cable to my pc & nothing happens, it does not even charge the phone. What have i to do to get it to work?

what version/service pack of Windows are you running? does it have a USB 1 or USB 2 connection? what is the version of iTunes you are running?

Windows system requirements
PC with USB 2.0 port
Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
iTunes 9.2 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
iTunes Store account
Internet access
