All of a sudden today, my email on my iphone 3gs stopped working. No settings have been changed. I tried doing a hard restart but still not working. Could this be an at&t problem? I'd rather not have to recreate all my mail account settings unless I have to, is this something that would normally clear up by itself, like a sore throat? Thanks.
If the same when connected to an available wi-fi network and unless you are unable to access the internet when connected to AT&T's cellular network, it is not an AT&T problem.
Since "imap.gmail.com" is not responding, are you accessing another email account with a different email account provider other than Google? If so, any problems connecting with the non-Gmail account?
Deleting an recreating an email account is not a big deal. If you used the Gmail account preset when creating the account, using the preset is as easy as it gets when creating an account. Unless you have contacted Google technical support and they have confirmed it is a temporary problem at Google's servers, try deleting and recreating the account. If no change after doing so, the problem lies with Google.

It is a temporary problem at Google's server, or it is a problem with the account on your iPhone that deleting and recreating the account will resolve unless the problem lies with Google.
Started having the same error with Speakeasy on one of my email accounts. Speakeasy (which is supposed to be a tech-savvy ISP) claims it's an iPhone Mail bug. However, some Googling shows other cases of this same error leading back to the ISP, not the iPhone.
