Is there a way to preconfigure the SSID onto the iPad without the SSID being present?
Not sure if you can do that. Check out the instructions for SSID on iPad here just in case.
Page 118 of the iPad Users Guide says:
Join a closed Wi-Fi network: To join a Wi-Fi network that isn’t shown in the list of

Thanks for the info. I did just this, but it does not allow you to save the wifi ssid. It tries to join by searching for it and then comes back with the error "Unable to join". I guess currently there is no way of preconfiguring this ahead of time... Will continue searching to see if I find anything and if I do I will post back. Thanks again
You may be able to do it with the iPhone Configuration Utility (the use of the name iPhone is a misnomer, it works for iOS devices)
