Data Usage Error- iPhone reports using 4GB sent & 4.1GB received??

My iphone 4 reports having Sent 4GB and received 4.1GB of data. There's no possible way I could've used that much data, especially sending that much. I hardly use 3G and I remain on WiFi where it's available. I also reset my usage statistics at the start of billing cycle so it's not accumulated. I contacted AT&T knowing that that amount of data would cost a fortune seeing that I'm only on the 200 mb plan. I figured it had to be an error of some sort because I never received an alert for reaching the half or full data limit. AT&T replied that I have only used 75 mb. What a relief! I remained on the phone for another 40 minutes trying to find out why I got an error. However, they weren't able to help me.

To avoid being stuck on the phone for another 40 minutes, I went to the Genius Bar. The "Genius" there had no idea why the phone reported that amount. He claimed that the amount was accumulated, I replied that there's no way I could've used that amount of data since July and I have reset the counter on 10/4/10. My send data is always 1/10th of what I receive. He claimed that the data counter includes Wifi usage. I stressed that the counter says that it is "Cellular Network Data" again and again seeing if he might correct himself. His final solution was to just restore the phone.

I went home, reset the usage counter, connected to wifi, downloaded and an app, and voila! the data usage says 0 bytes received proving that my wifi has not been running up the counter. Apparently Apple needs restaff that store.

I've discovered a few ways to accurately check my data through AT&T:

1) Get AT&T's myWireless app (which I am unable to access because I am not the AT&T account holder.)

2)*3282# receives an alert on data usage.

3) simply call AT&T

Here's my question: How could the counter come up with that outrageous of a number? I wouldn't want it to someday send that data amount to AT&T and bill me for it.

Just registered to add my little bit of info to the topic to try help others.

I have my iPhone 4 around four weeks and I too noticed a huge jump from 69MB (as a new customer I had been checking every few days to see how much I was using within my bill cycle) to sent / received 4GB / 4.01GB like everyone else. I was v v worried about this for a few days as I thought I had blown my data usage out of the water!!

Thank goodness there seems to some similarity in all the posts here Re the 4/4.01GB sent / received. My carrier Vodafone Ireland have confirmed that I haven't been charged either - so obviously a glitch.

Me on iOS 4.2.1

I can now start using my 3G again...phew, as was afraid to go near it..!!! please fix if possible Apple as not nice for people to experience this feeling for a few days!!!

Love my phone otherwise though!!

Clearly this is a bug. I too noticed the addition of 4gb to both my upload and download stats so that now it reads 4.0gb up and 4.3gb down. Before all I had was about 300mb.

Seems this glitch just adds 4gb to both stats on your phone, but this is not seen by your telco.

You can either reset your stats, or just let it ride as it is as you can track your stats just by subtracting 4gb from both numbers.

Exact same thing happened to my partners iphone the other day - I reset al phone settings 4 days ago as we thought we had a settings problem (ended up be the speaker was turned off on the side...)

Yesterday noticed than an app had been left open over night so went to check the usage on his phone and it was showing the 4.1 GB downloaded and 4gb sent

Freaked out understandably... still have to wait till tomorrow to get the REAL figure for his usage off his phone co as it can take 48 hours to come across they reckon...

Am very happy to read here that it seems to be a common bug ...

Hi all. Same thing happened to me. But I got 8 gb upload and 8 gb down load. I only have 100 megs in my plan, but I never ever go over this limit.
I called my carrier and since the billing cycle ended yesterday they wont be able to tell me anything for 6 days!.
This would be like a 30K dollar bill. I was glad ti find this thread.
Apple should fix this bug!

Finally got my bill today. Since I noticed the outrageous data usage of 8gigs upload and 8.1 download on the day after my billing cycle closed, my company could not give me any info until the bill was processed. My actual usage was 32 M total. Not 16.2 gigs as reported by my iphone. We should hold apple responsible for emotional distress!

Background--I have an updated iPhone 4, live in a very rural area where the closest 3g network is over an hour away, and I stay at home 95% of the time where my data comes through my wireless router and phone calls come through my ATT Microcell.

Last night I got the text saying "you have used 90% of your data," then 10 minutes later got another saying that I was over and would be charged. I had spent the day in a large city with 3G access and had used the following apps on my phone (in addition to regular phone calls): email, texts, maps, safari, and yelp.

This morning I called ATT and discussed the problem at length. I was told that this past month, I had had two days in which I had used an extraordinarily high (for me) amount of data--yesterday and last Saturday. I was in the same large city last Saturday along with my daughter, who also has an iPhone 4 and uses it like most people her age, HEAVILY! ATT checked her data usage for the day she was in the city with me and found that her data usage was quite low.

As a result of reading this thread, I found out how to kill the apps that are running in the background, so I have done that. In that process I realized that there was one app that I rarely have need to use, but that I used both yesterday and last Saturday--Yelp. All of the other apps that were in this "active" line-up at the bottom of my screen were the apps that I use daily. Now it's not as if I was "yelping" constantly for the several hours I was in the city. I opened it, looked at a few things, then went on about my business.

This brings me to the question: Is there any way of tracking data usage by any of these individual apps? I can look at history in Safari, but what about the other network-using apps? Has anyone else noticed a problem with Yelp?

I's a shame!

I've just bought one i4, have the same problem (4Gb up/4.1 down) after 3 weeks. As I've been reading this thread I've realized this is happening before 4.2.1 IOS version and, as XliteAL3000 said: "it looks like the 32nd bit flipped - maybe a signed/unsigned flaw/shifting problem..." which is a very easy to find and resolv bug... but APPLE HAS DONE NOTHING!!.
