I've provided feedback, but subsequent iPhoto updates still have this glaring omission. Anyone got any other solutions?

Frankly, I've stopped using this program entirely because of this one issue. If I can't bulk tag/sort/etc... then I'm regulated to monkey work, and I'd rather just not use it at all.

    I submitted a request. Here's hoping.

You can bulk keyword, you can sort etc. This simply affects one possible way to display the keywords, nothing else.

I also find this amazing that such a useful feature has been turned off.  I did find a workaround to share.

If you don't use Flag for anything else, then you can search for keyword XYZ, select All, Flag selected, cancel search.

Now the flag shows up for all the photos with that keyword.  You can scroll and review your album, and turn on /off the flag for each picture.

When all done, use the keyword panel to remove keyword XYZ from all photos, then go to recent/Flagged album, select all, and set keyword XYZ on all. Finally, remove flags from all.

    Irritating, but better than nothing

Almost 2 years later and still no fix. Seriously?!

Whoa, 9 months later, on 9.4.3, and still broken. Just got a new iMac, had been using iPhoto '09, lovingly, on my old, old MBP. Sorta absurd that this bug is present. I just submitted feedback as a number of other people on this thread pointed out to do.

    Go for it!

Yes you can bulk keyword photos:

1 - select the photos you want to add the same keyword(s) to:

2 - type Command + K to bring up the Keyword pane.

    SkitchScreenSnapz001.jpg

3 - click on the keyword(s) you want to add to all of the selected photos. Blue keywords indicate those assigned to the photos. Those without a dash (–) are assigned to all selected photos.  Those with a dash (–) are assigned only to a subset of the selected photos.

Yes, but you can't view the keywords under the photos.  In picassa, you can view all tags easily so that if you are missing tags, or, want to add additional tags, you could see what you've already done.

What are some alternatives to using iPhoto where keywords will be displayed beneath each image?

One that I use is Media Pro 1.  It lets you put any of the many EXIF and ITPC metadata fields below the thumbnails.

The keywords can also be viewed in the info tray to the left of the thumbnails:
