iPhoto '11 stuck in loop trying to upgrade.

So I run iPhoto 11 and it tells me I have to upgrade. I do the upgrade and I get the progress bar. However, after the progress bar is done a grey screen with the spining pinwheel (not the beach ball) sets spining. I left it to run for three hours and it is still processing. I will let it run over night but I think it is a bug. If I select my photos the spinning pinwheel does go away, but when I close out and go back in it tells me I need to upgrade the library. My pictures folder is 34GB.

Anyone else having the problem?

Thanks

After several hours of working through this I think it is finally repaired.

I tried removing the plist file, rebuilding the iPhoto database and repairing permissions but none of those solved the problem.

When I reopened my original database in iPhoto '09 and looked at the "Keepsake" items, (now called Projects in iPhoto '11), I noticed a message that said the template for those items was no longer available and to choose a different template. Since these were all old projects I deleted them all and retried iPhoto '11. This time the database converted in about 5 minutes (about 3700 photos, 8.6GB database) and I got the "Welcome to iPhoto '11" screen and the conversion held.

It appears (at least for me) that some of the old photo books, calendars, etc. are no longer supported in iPhoto '11 and therefore the new program doesn't know what to do with them so the conversion hangs.

If you are having this problem with the spinnning gear, I suggest deleting your "Keepsake" items and retry the conversion

Hope this helps.

I just wanted folks to know that Apple is actively looking into this problem as we speak and I have been contacted by Apple to provide further information to help get this resolved. I think we need to rule out Divx. If you have installed Divx and you are having this problem please reply back.

If you have Divx and you don't have this problem, then reply back with your divx version number.

Finally, what is the problem? When you run iPhoto 11 for the first time you are prompted to upgrade. The progress bar goes to 100% and goes away.
You are left with a grey background with a spinning pinwheel not the spinning beach ball. Some times you can click to your pictures to the left and everything appears fine. However, when you close iPhoto and go back in you are prompted for the upgrade again.

I don't think it is the Project folder. Because after a successful upgrade and you select a project it asks if you want to convert it.

On another note, tonight I am going to install Snow Leopard and iLife 09 onto an external HD and all the updates. Then I will attempt to install iLife 11 and then attempt the upgrade. This will help rule out other applications causing a conflict.

I have Divx player/Converter 2.1

I don't think it is the Project folder in general. It appears that if you have items in the folder that is no supported right now, like calendars, the conversion fails. In your case, you may have projects, like books, that can be converted.

I suspect there are many people with Keepsakes/Projects that have not had a conversion problem but it woiuld appear that at least for some projects, the conversion is hanging up.

I had no problem upgrading, but now I have a problem restarting! It's been spinning for about twenty minutes now in an attempt to open the library.

I have this same issue with three separate iPhoto libraries. Upgrade works fine, but after restarting iPhoto it doesn't load the library and just keeps showing the spinning (b&w) icon. I hope this gets fixed soon!!!

And it also happens with libraries that don't have keepsakes/projects in them.

Apple should have worked on this BEFORE releasing the product. My move to iPhoto 11 has shut me down. I have a critical project and I can't spend another 4 hours trying to get this to work. What happened to software quality and product testing?

Been using Apple software since 1985 and this is the worst product release ever!!!

I've managed to solve the constant rebuild problem - for myself at least. I rebooted in safe mode (hold shift down). Then I loaded iPhoto, it rebuilt the database and went to the welcome screen. I quit and reloaded and it still worked. I rebooted again in normal mode and it still works.

Hope it works for others too.
