iPhoto '11 stuck in loop trying to upgrade.

So I run iPhoto 11 and it tells me I have to upgrade. I do the upgrade and I get the progress bar. However, after the progress bar is done a grey screen with the spining pinwheel (not the beach ball) sets spining. I left it to run for three hours and it is still processing. I will let it run over night but I think it is a bug. If I select my photos the spinning pinwheel does go away, but when I close out and go back in it tells me I need to upgrade the library. My pictures folder is 34GB.

Anyone else having the problem?

Thanks

I finally managed to get the libraries working. What I did was get the old version back from a backup and then redid the upgrade process. I then noticed that there was an update icon behind the Places folder. I waited till that was finished before closing the library. The previous times, I immediately closed the library after the upgrade was finished, as I wanted to upgrade my other libraries.

No idea if this has anything to do with it, but at least my libraries are now working (though I have some other problems name with places).

I also had this problem with iPhoto 11 getting stuck on library upgrade. I tried some of the things other people have been suggesting to no avail. However, I was still able to import iPhoto library into my Aperture library, so did that and then trashed my iPhoto 09 library allowing iPhoto 11 to create a new one.

Obviously this solution won't help anyone who doesn't have Aperture, but it is a work-around for those who have.

It seems to me very bad that after a presentation of Mac is back there is immediately an issue with one of the main application of iLife.

But returnig to the issue, what it worked for me is this:
- the first conversion of an iPhoto Library goes well
- when I reopen iPhoto it stucks on rotating wheel, so close iPhoto
- then I open the Package content and delete iPhotoMain.db
- duplicate the iPhotoMain.db.bak
- rename the duplicated file back to iPhotoMain.db
- open again iPhoto that make another conversion
- after this everything works

Is this a feature of the application or an issue? 😉

Silly Me:

I always jump onto new Apple software with never a fear. Just loaded iLife and iPhoto 11 and bam. I guess I should have checked here before I jumped off the bridge

1. Blew up my library on both my Macs
2. Blew out my .mov's
3. Added it for the new books features and program wont move past select book type, no edit screen
4. Good thing I have my master images. So much for years of sorting folders and building events.
5. Should have read the screen that said once converted you can go back to a previous version. Who ever heard of doing that to a nice piece of software.

And Steve was so proud of it this week in the press conference. I guess the PM had a supper tweaked up version for the conference.

I agree this problem is not solved. I also tried SR5 solution without any luck. I spent time with a mac phone support tech also trying various things without any solution. I emailed him my console logs and he said he would get back to me after working with some of the apple engineers, when I spoke to him Friday. I was also surprised when someone from apple called me up on the first day after reading my previous post to try and help out. I ended up sending him my console logs too.

Very ugly issue. Teaches me to buy software on day one. Next time I will be searching the blogs to ensure there is no problem. What is strange is that I have not seen a peep about this on the web. You think this would be big news. This will not be fixed ultimately till a patch goes out.

Stick 455 could you tell me what settings you used because i have Stellar Phoenix but didn't find anything, did you do a quick recovery or full? and did you scan only a certain folder or the entire HD?
cause my Iphoto library went from 300GB to 5.75 GB and i only have 1 picture however all the events are still listed with the amount of pictures but there are no pictures in them just !
Thanks for any help

I reinstalled just iPhoto '11 from the iLife disk and upgraded the library and it had no effect. It still wants to upgrade the library again after opening it time after time.

I did notice a large iPhoto and iPhoto library folder in my trash. I didn't put it there but my original iPhoto library was still in its location...?

I have no idea anymore, tried everything!

iPhoto '11 stuck in loop trying to upgrade.
