iPhoto '11 stuck in loop trying to upgrade.

So I run iPhoto 11 and it tells me I have to upgrade. I do the upgrade and I get the progress bar. However, after the progress bar is done a grey screen with the spining pinwheel (not the beach ball) sets spining. I left it to run for three hours and it is still processing. I will let it run over night but I think it is a bug. If I select my photos the spinning pinwheel does go away, but when I close out and go back in it tells me I need to upgrade the library. My pictures folder is 34GB.

Anyone else having the problem?

Thanks

Hi guys,

So like most of you the hanging loop has had me stressing for the better part of half a day. I've tried and tested all the suggested fixes in this thread E.g. delete Quicktime components, files within the iPhoto gallery path etc etc, none worked and time and time again resulted in the loop on upgrade getting stuck....until now!!!

I can confirm the following works, and I use the same iPhoto library with a Chronosync between my MacMini Server and my MacBook Pro which syncs the iPhoto library between both machines. (Both copies open and are running fine now with everything as it would be expected separately on both machines).

Steps to follow:

1). If you have the original backup of your iPhoto 9x library pull it from Time Machine or backup drive. (If you're already in the loop after attempting an upgrade try this and hopefully it should work too).

2). Make sure you reboot your system in safe mode by holding the shift key until you see the progress bar.

3). Then start iPhoto holding the Command (Apple) and Option (Alt) keys which will prompt you to rebuild the library, selecting options 1,2 and 6.

Upgrade went through in around 10 minutes for a 30GB library, no errors, no problems, working as it should have the first time round.

Hope it helps you guys and you get the same fix to your library problem, Apple...this is the first disappointment I've had, you guys are always ahead of Microsoft, for a second I thought I had reverted back to a time of Windows.. thankfully not 🙂

Regards
Andy

Andy,

I've done this...and it still isn't working for me. Every picture is listed but no actual photo, just dotted outlines. I'm sick to my stomach! can see the photo in time machine - unfortunately last back up was Sept. 12 (my fault I know..but come on Apple!). When I go to restore the iphoto library from that backup it get about 2GB into a 46GB iphoto library and says I don't have permission to access the library.

I noticed my problems started when I went to sync my iphone...the looping/ upgrade actually removed pictures from my phone!

I installed iLife 11 and upgraded iPhoto without problems.

Unfortunately I don't have any thing to offer in terms of troubleshooting your issue but I do want to say that you probably should've used 'iPhoto Buddy' to store the photos in smaller iPhoto libraries.

Lastly, I'd recommend against using iPhoto or Picasa for storing photos long term, no matter they say. Store photos in their native form, like Word files. If you want to organize, sort, share, etc, than you'd import the photos into iPhoto. That way, if you have issues with iPhoto/Picasa, you can still get your photos back.

iPhoto is free. No issues with iPhoto 11 that I know of.

Todd, I can only hope Apple resolve the problem for you asap with some fix / restore and you get your photo's back. I'm still very surprised that this bug wasn't picked up in testing before launch, very "un-Apple".

Scott, I didn't get that prompt, is this a new library? Maybe make a backup of the library before choosing.

On that note, I am still quite concerned. If you've been one of the lucky one's who have managed to fix the endless upgrade loop problem with a fix / suggestion from here. Are our photo's all really safe now? Are they all in iPhoto as I have heard of thumbnails showing by then the photo's not actually being there. Does anyway know if there is some other kind of a check / tool to confirm physical photo files?

I am going to keep my iPhoto 9 library backup for a while, just in case there are some ugly repercussions in a few weeks.
