iPhoto '11 duplicates when editing in external editor

What the topic says. iPhoto automatically creates a duplicate, that actually shows up as a duplicate in the library, when you choose to edit a photo in an external editor (such as Photoshop). It used to just replace the original, thus showing only the edited version (though keeping the original file if you want to go back to it), which is exactly what happens if you choose to just edit in iPhoto.

Bug? Feature?

I can not speak to iPhoto 11 as it has not arrived at my house yet

But

It used to just replace the original, thus showing only the edited version (though keeping the original file if you want to go back to it), which is exactly what happens if you choose to just edit in iPhoto.

iPhoto has never replaced the original - it passes a copy to the external editor and when you edit and save (not save as) it returns that photo to the modified folder in iPhoto exactly the save as it does when you edit in iPhoto -- maybe there is a bug ( or change) in iPhoto '11 - Old Toad probably knows and I will soon

Are you setting PS as the external editor and then saving (not saving as)?

Correct. In this case, it first creates a duplicate (that shows up in the library), and opens the ext. editor automatically. I then edit the file (in PS), cmd+S, and have two copies of the photo. One edited, one original. Which is not what iPhoto '09 did.

And yes, I know '09 or any other version didn't actually replace the original, but in the visual library it sort of did.

I am a new iPhoto user and just noticed this behavior. Is there any way to change preferences so it will not duplicate the image? Even if I choose not to save any changes I end up with two files, the original and the copy. If I want to edit the original again, I end up with yet another copy. The original plus two duplicates. I can't tell the difference between them when I view them in iPhoto so I don't have any idea which one is the original. It is very confusing.

I hate this feature. If it actually is a feature. The way iPhoto '09 dealt with editted images (by storing the original away and replacing it with the new version in the image library) was FAR superior.

I import all my images directly to iPhoto and then edit them in Photoshop (by double clicking the thumbnails - another feature I might add that is no longer available in iPhoto '11). In many cases there are several images i ultimately edit in a single event. With iPhoto '11, I am now duplicating much of my library. Is Apple trying to push me to switch to Adobe Lightroom?

Please Apple, fix this issue. And while your at it, let me send my images directly to Mail.app without the silly background feature.

Same problem. I edit in external editor (PSE) and an edited copy shows up as well as the original. I highlite the edited copy and try to revert to original and nothing happens. I send the edited copy to the trash and empty the trash, highlite the original again and choose edit in external editor and the edited version pops up again as if I had never trashed it.

Another annoying issue: I really don't want to mess around with slide shows but am forced to if I want to look at a photo in full screen view. iPhoto 09, full screen view meant, highlite a photo, full screen view, photo shows up in full screen. Simple and exactly what I want. Now full screen simply means the left column disappears and I'm looking at a full screen of thumb nails. What good is that? OK, so I'll play that game. Select slide show, window pops up the first time asking for slide show settings. Select classic instead of disolve and check that as the default. Every single event that window pops up asking me for slide show settings even though I have selected my defaults. I have something like 850 events and I got very annoyed selecting classic as my default every single time. And why do they imagine I want to listen to music? I clone mt hard drive once a week and have a copy of my drive with iPhoto 09 on it. I'm going back to 09.

I agree! Duplicate photos is a very serious problem for me. If this isn't fixed (or if this is the way Apple has designed it) then I may be forced to switch to PSE's Organizer. I really don't want to do that because of the advantages I get from close integration of Apple products. Please Apple, make this work the way iPhoto '09 worked.

I have the same problem, I use to edit ALL of my photos, and after deleting one by one - sometimes when I double-click the photo to enlarge - it simply disapears.
I'm really disapointed with Apple, iPhoto 11 is a downgrade...

I'm having the exact same problem; it is driving me crazy.

Worse yet, if you delete the original picture (and only keep the photo edited in Photoshop), then very very bad things happen. Specifically, the thumbnail of the edited photo will still be shown -- but the file doesn't exist.

Between this major functionality issue -- and the fact that I can no longer easily preview multiple photos together in full-screen mode -- I would really really really love to downgrade.

I have had the same issues using an external editor in iPhoto '11. I called Apple support and was on the phone with them for 90 minutes. During the conversation, I was passed on to an advanced support rep. They stated that it was working as designed. If this is really an "enhancement", why not duplicate when using the iPhoto editor?

I decided at that point to revert back to iPhoto '09. This was not an easy process and they were very helpful in walking me through it. I will happily stick with iPhoto '09 until this "enhancement" is removed on a future update.
