OS X Tiger installation

Help! I think I've messed up. I just got my OS X Tiger upgrade pack and launched straight into installing (I did do a back up first) without checking out the discussions to see what I should do to prepare. It seems to have caused a few problems. Firstly I couldn't finish the Setup Assistant after installing as the install wiped all my wireless settings so I had to do a reboot to get that going again. Then when I had restarted I couldn't find the Setup Assistant anywhere to go through it properly. I am also now having problems with Intego Net Barrier which isn't launching when I start up and gives me a Diagnostics error message when I start up saying it could not load the login file.
I suspect I am going to find other problems as I try to launch applications.
Is there anything I can do to get things working properly again.

Which installation method did you choose?

Simple Upgrade
Archive & Install
Erase & Install

Unless you chose Erase & Install, you should not be prompted with the Setup Assistant after the installation.

Did you purchase/use a Tiger retail install package and not an install or upgrade package that shipped with a new Mac purchase?

I chose Easy Install (Simple Upgrade wasn't offered as an option). The package is a retail package.

The available option you used/selected is "Upgrade Mac OS X" which is an easy or simple upgrade but regardless, the Setup Assistant should be provided or is only provided when turning on a new Mac purchase or when performing an Erase & Install of any OS X version.

Assuming you didn't check the hard drive for any directoy problems with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utilities when booted from the Tiger install disc and/or you didn't disconnect any external peripheral devices except for an external keyboard and mouse (if used with your TiBook), check Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.

Is it also safe to assume you didn't create a backup of all important data before installing Tiger which should always be the first step before installing a major OS Upgrade such as Tiger and before installing any major OS Update to Tiger?

I did do a back up - I always do before installing any software, but have been having problems using Disk First Aid from my Panther install disk for a while so didn't do that first. I did run Disk Warrior about a week ago and rebuilt the directory. I didn't disconnect any of my external devices - mouse, printer etc. but did disconnect my external hard drive before commencing the install.
Will now try the steps you suggest.

OK - most of the issues seem to have been resolved by running Disk Utility except that everytime I boot up I get Recovered Files appearing in the Trash. This is reminiscent of the old OS 9 problems. Any thoughts on how to sort this one out?

The recovered files folder in the Trash after a restart contains items that are periodically flushed from your computer's temporary directory (/tmp).

This was the same with OS 9 after a restart and the same occured with OS X versions prior to Tiger but the items that are periodically flushed from the computer's temporary directory were deleted automatically during a restart prior to Tiger.

Nope.

The recovered files were always there almost every restart if not every restart with OS 9.

I started seeing them after the 3rd time or so that I restarted my new 17" PB. They aren't available after each and every restart but I don't restart my Mac very often.
