Numerous problems with iPhoto '11

I am having a nightmare with iPhoto '11

1. Every time I open it, it asks me to upgrade my photo library. When it closes it saves changes, but comes up with the same upgrade message each time.
2. It hangs when trying to import photos from a file.
3. It doesn't see my iPhone (not tried it with another camera yet, but not hopeful)
4. Cannot open books I've already made, and when I create a new book, nothing happens - other than adding a new book under the project list. However, even this disappears next time I open iPhoto '11.

I am currently regretting upgrading at all!

I have restarted the computer and tried repairing permissions.

It appears that the library that you restored was damaged in that it was missing 600 pictures. Try this: launch iPhoto with the Option key held down to create a new, test library. Import some photos into it to see if they end up blank. If not then your current library is damaged.

If that's the case make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:

Fix #1

1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.

2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.

3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.

NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

Fix #2

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.

Select the options identified in the screenshot.

Fix #3

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

  • Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
  • Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
  • Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
  • In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
  • Click on the Create button.

  • Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

If none of these fix the problem this is your next step:

Start over from scratch with new library

Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:

    1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.

    2. Open the library package like this.

    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.

    4. Drag the Origianls (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

    User uploaded file

This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects. Your current library will still be available for further testing if desired.

Oh boy, upgrading doesn't seem to be a good thing....😕 I have been using iPhoto '09 since I bought my 24" iMac a few years back & it has served me well to date (library of 18K+ pics, edited over 1,500 pics to date for my photo website). Was pretty much sold on switching to Aperture until reading the horrendous reviews both here & on the App Store, thouht maybe I'd upgrade to iPhoto11 (my wife's new MacBook Pro has it but haven't tried it yet)...now after reading the 28 pages of negative reviews just on this one topic, I am thoroughly confused. Was hoping to upgrade to another Apple product to give me some more flexibility when editing (I'm a believer in getting it right in the camera in the first place but a little editing always helps) but now I am unsure if I want to venture beyond iPhoto '09. Why mess with success, right???

Anyone have any worthwhile input on where I should go from here? Thought Aperture & iPhoto11 would make the process easier but it seems a lot of key features were either lost or hidden in these new programs.

Doesn't sound like Lion is a "roaring" success either (pun intended) 😀 judging by the reviews I've read so far. I'm a definite Mac convert, they should put me on the books I promote them so much but judging by these new programs, I have to say I'm not too impressed with their latest ventures.

Just my 2 cents...curious to hear others as well...Thanks for the input 😉

    Couple of pointers:

    1. This forum is for people who have problems. The people whon don't have problems don't come here. So the "reviews" here are skewed to the negative by definition. Same is true of the Lion forum and the Aperture one as well.

So, best thing: try it. Especially as you have it on your wife's machine. Import 100 pics into it and explore. It's worth more than all the reviews on here.

    2. It's impossible to suggest what app you should use for your photographs because you son't tell us what kind o photographer you are. Shooting Raw? Jpeg? Snapping family birthdays and vacations? Serious hobbyist?

    3. Aperture is an excellent app - though in some usage cases it's overkill. Again, you can download a free trial from the Apple site.

TD, I realize that no one on these help forums is going to be raving about how wonderful programs are. You can drive yourself mad reading reviews because no two users, particularly photographers are the same. Just thought I'd try to get some input on something more advanced that iPhoto '09 (although maybe less is more in some cases).

I will give iPhoto11 a whirl with a few pics to see what it does. I downloaded the latest updates today...any suggestions of actions to take before importing pics or editing? Seems to be there are a few little things you can do to tweak its' performance.

I shoot primarily large size JPEG's as a serious hobbyist (wha'st the term for someone between a hobby & an obsession??...that would be me) 😁 My website is www.unyquefiretrucks.com if you'd like to see some of my work.

Thanks for your input, I'll give iPhoto11 a try & see where it takes me...

I've been going through the thread (not reading every single one) but I don't see my issue. I have a fresh copy of iPhoto '11 installed and started to import all new photos. Since it is new to me (I'm familiar with most all previous versions), especially how it shares (emails) photos directly out of iPhoto (bypassing the Mail application altogether rather than creating an email for me to address and send manually), I am having a problem.

When sharing a photo via email, I did a test to myself and received the photo (with the paperclip indicator) on my iPhone but did not receive the attachment (or the paperclip indicator) on my MacBook using Thunderbird. I receive the email ok but the body of the email has a big blank square where the pic should be but there's no attachment, yet it shows up on my iPhone no problem. I can understand Thunderbird not displaying the pic but there is no indication whatsoever that there is an attachment nor is there an actual attachment.

If I drag the photo out of iPhoto and make a copy on my desktop then drop it into a new email message (in Mail) and send it that way, it works fine.

    Any suggestions?

I have never been so frustrated with anything as I currently am my Mac ... the new operating system that is slower than an turtle and frequently locks up.

I am TOO accustomed to seeing the spinning pinwheel. I feel like I have gone back in time with this.

I am using Mac OS 10.6.8 and installed iLife '11 for iPhoto. I WISH I HAD NEVER DONE THIS!!!

iPhoto is horrible. The edit features are a joke compared to the ones in previous versions. I LOVED the older version. In my opinion, this one needs to be recalled immediately (along with the operating system)!!!!!!!!!!!
