Numerous problems with iPhoto '11

I am having a nightmare with iPhoto '11

1. Every time I open it, it asks me to upgrade my photo library. When it closes it saves changes, but comes up with the same upgrade message each time.
2. It hangs when trying to import photos from a file.
3. It doesn't see my iPhone (not tried it with another camera yet, but not hopeful)
4. Cannot open books I've already made, and when I create a new book, nothing happens - other than adding a new book under the project list. However, even this disappears next time I open iPhoto '11.

I am currently regretting upgrading at all!

I have restarted the computer and tried repairing permissions.

I have downloaded Iphoto Library Manager and cannot find a method to display the library in Event thumbnails as in Iphoto ? Someone please tell me if you know how? Here are my issues with Iphoto11: 1) will not allow me to manually sort events as I wish. After sorting them to my preference, Iphoto 11 will crash. Not just the app the entire machine will shut down and restart. I will get a "there were disprepencies in your whatever" press here to fix or whatever the exact wording is, which I will do as well as, fix permissions, reset PRAM blah blah, only to have Iphoto reopen to an absolute mess of disorganized event thumbnails. Do it again: same thing wash rinse repeat. Only to finally give up and have to live with a disorganized mess. 2) living with disorganized mess of out of sequence event thumbnails, browsing in one of them after importing photos everything will freeze, machine crashes. Cycle begins again. Im a journalist. I need acess to my photos as I wish them to be. This was a state of the art machine why would one require secondary programs to do something as rudimentary as photo management?

iPhoto Library Manager is not a photo manager - it is a great tool to manage iPhoto libaries

1 - events are not good for organization and you will never be happy trying to use the and manually sort them - use albums and folder for organization

if you want help then you need to actually provide detailed information - statements like '"there were disprepencies in your whatever" press here to fix or whatever the exact wording is, '

'fix permissions, reset PRAM blah blah, '

are useless - to get help the exact message is critical

2 - you need to either learn how to use iPhoto or find another progam to use - you clain to be a Journalist - how would your editor react a story including "they said Blah, Blah or what ever"?

iPhoto is probably a great program for you but not unless you learn how to use it

Why should I need to learn anything to use a photo manager. I despise supercilious apple fanatics like you where no matter the question the answer is user error. Apple's job is to code programs that dont crash when used by a novice or expert. My job is irrelevent as far as your input is concerened. "iphoto library manager is not a photo manager-it is a great tool to manage iphoto libraries" LOL/WUT? other than this sentence being self contradictory, and annoying it is very obviously incorrect if I can decipher some fragment of meaning from it. Because it is very much not a great tool at all. It is a tool that crashes my Macbook if I do the very simple task of arranging events manually. As an addendum I am a print journalist and get paid to be one, I am not paid by apple to trouble shoot and write detailed bug reports to your specificity. Now if you cant figure out a way to aid in the very concise problems I have laid out then I suggest you not comment at all in the future because it is solely an irritant.

I agree your job is irrevelant - makes me wonder why you put it in yoru post

As to learning to use software - unless you do you will live a life of frustration - it most certainly IS your responsibility to learn how to use everything in yoru life - your house, yoru car and yoru software

No one said that your issue was user error (neither word occures a single time in my post) - what was said was that your refusal to provied any ainformatin makes it inpossible to help you

And I see no reference in your silly post to indicate that any software is crashing - if it is then it is not a learning issue but a different issue - which will never be knows sinc eyhou are incapabile of providing intellibent answers to simple questions

So you have a great day and enjoy your crappy attitude

Is your spellcheck not operating? When a user is having issues using software and goes to the makers forum for assistance there is nothing more irritating than a response like yours. I have indicated several times that my ENTIRE MACBOOK PRO WILL SHUT DOWN aka crash after manually arranging events. Then after restart and I will have the promt "there were disprepencies in your iphoto library fix now?" you said "you need to either learn how to use iphto or find another program to use" This is not implying user error?? Why should I have to search for another program after paying a whole lot of money for an apple machine and the software that comes with it? I am trying to do something very simple that is right there in the program's menu "sort events manually" no more no less, and this crashes my very expensive macbook pro every single time.

I suggest you start a new topic and include the relavant information about what you're trying to accomplish, what the problem is and what fixes you've attempted so far. It's never good to tack your post onto the tail end of an old and very long topic. It best to start your own where you problem is first and foremost.

In the meantime try the following: apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

Fix #1

1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

User uploaded file

2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.

Fix #2

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.

2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..

3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.

4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.

5 - Click on the Create button.

Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

OT -

I've never had a problem with iPhoto before returning from a trip last week with 1000+ photos to sort through. I have them in folders and as I go through and edit and delete I can make it through a dozen or sometimes hundreds and then iPhoto quits suddenly and all the changes are lost - sometimes days worth of changes - but the folders and photos are still there. I backed up my computer and tried #3 and #4 in the 1st Aid list. I'm using iPhoto '11 9.4.3 and OS X 10.8.4 on a 2 year old macbook pro.

I have more than 20,000 photos - will adding a library with iPhoto Library Manager double the amount of space the photos use? Anything else I could/should try 1st? Advice gratefully received.

Yes, if you have the room. But if the new library works and you've confirmed that it has all of your pictures you can delete the original library to free up space.

but the folders and photos are still there.

You're referring to albums in the iPhoto library, right?

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos, edit them and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

Checking your profile I found it interestng that you are having no end of problems with you Mac. So many problems with hardware and software most people can get to work with no problems.

You don't understand that this is not a " makers forum". It is a community of users helping other users. The people you have been dealing with here are expert users who have seen it all.

You might try a more polite approach. Your present attitude is just digging a deeper and deeper hole.

I imported about 400 photos into a test library and spent about 20 minutes editing about 100 of them; the problem hasn't cropped up again, at least yet. Sometimes in the original library it would let me edit and organize for that long, then at some point the wheel would turn and turn in an attempt to save and iPhoto would disappear.

And yes, I was referring to the albums in iPhoto. Thanks again for tips and insight.

Since the new, test library doesn't exhibit the same problem it's time to try to repair you main library. Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

User uploaded file

2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.

Ok, back home to work on the problem again. I had already tried the Repair Database and Rebuild Database options so I'll try your Fix #2 now. This is out of my comfort zone so I want to be sure my computer has what it needs to meet these iPLM requirements:

Version: 4.0.9

Requirements:

  • Mac OS X v10.6.8 and later
  • iPhoto v8.1.2 and later
  • Mac computer with an Intel
Core 2 Duo processor or better

My computer:

MacBook Pro

13-inch, Early 2011

Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB

Software OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

Thanks in advance!
