Can't open Word docx documents

Can't open Word docx documents

When I try to open a docx document, my new mac opens Textedit instead of Word, and it is blank. My other Mac opens Word, but I think I had to download an update or something to make it work. What do I need to do?

iMac 2.4 GHz, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Once Word is installed, drag it onto the Word icon in the Dock, or select it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and change the Open With setting.

When I dragged it to Word, it opened, but was gibberish. When I went to Get Info, the only Open With choice besides TextEdit was Archive Utility, and that didn't do it.

It's not a docx. Rename it to .zip and try opening it again.

Change the file's name in the Finder as you would any other. You may be asked to confirm this action.
