Good question. Need to know if the Air's Mini DisplayPort has the digital sound output signal just like the 2010 MacBook Pros. It works for those systems, but barely reliable.

A better question:

Why is sound output too difficult of an engineering hurdle for Apple Inc? Maybe the company could spend some of the $50 billion in cash on a digital audio engineer...or maybe splurge on hiring two guys who can work together.

Hi

I can confirm that my new Macbook Air 11" does indeed output audio via HDMI. You do need to ensure that your Mini Display Port to HDMI adapter does support audio output however, as not all do. You will also need to change your audio output options to output to the HDMI device rather than use the internal speaker.

To answer the other question, when I plugged in my Macbook Air to my 40 inch Sony, this became a second desktop. I.E. It doesn't display what is on your Mac screen, but you drag applications to the right onto the TV desktop. I haven't tried any HD content as yet, but as far as I know you shouldn't have any problems.

Regards,

Phil.

Phil, do you have any trouble with sound loss? I've connected my air (2010) to a new Sony 3D tv using the mini DP to HDMI adapter. Both sound and picture transfer, but quite often there is a glitch in the sound transfer and for a second I loose the sound, then it comes back again. The picture is 100% intact. Have you experienced the same problem? Any Ideas on how to solve it? It's sort of annoying...

Hey, I also have a MiniDisplayPort to HDMI adapter and can confirm that it does support audio output following the instructions Phil posted. His information about having to drag applications onto the screen is a little off though. While the default settings when you plug the external display is to act like a second display, if you go into the Displays pane of System Preferences you'll find the page that shows both displays so you can organize where you want them to be in relation to one another (To the left, above, below, etc.). At the bottom of this window is a box you can check that says mirror displays, this sets it as the same output, what is on the laptop screen is what is on the External Display.

Hi Micwil, I have exactly the same problem. I connect my mac using displayport to HDMI adapter to my Yamaha receiver and TV and I often lose the sound for a second and then it comes back. I also get popping/cracking noise from the speakers more or less as often.

Didn't have any of these problems when I made the same connection with my PC laptop.

Hi
I wonder if Apple Technicians ever check into these sites? Instruction and knowledge from the experts would save so much time.

Okay, yes same issue. I have now have a MacBook Air 11" (Wonderful Computer) bought a Mini Displayport to HDMI adaptor plus HDMI cable. Attached all 3 together, attached to Panasonic HDTV. Got picture no sound! Checked again what I bought bought yes it will deal with sound and stated with MacBook air, the Google search bought me here.

From what I read here prompted me to attach all components go to System Preferences > Sound > Output. There I had an option Name: Panasonic TV Type: HDMI. Clicked this option Hey Presto I had sound through TV. Note this option only appears when you are connected to the TV.

I bought my Macbook pro from a apple store. I was never notify that HDMI does not support audio and only visual. When i purchased my macbook pro i even asked them can i connect this to my TV and projector. The answer was "YES". I even bought the extension for HDMI. After i went online to look it up and then i found out that only 2011 model works for HDMI. So i decided to contact the retailer and i was told there is nothing they can do. I want my HDMI to work properly. Please tell me what can i do. Thank you.
