How do I add a face name..

on a photo with no existing names? The "add a face..." is greyed out in the info window. Clicking on the photo doesn't bring up that box to add the name either?

Try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.

NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

Have you tried the following:

1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.

2 - backup the library and launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed to rebuild the library. Select the options #1, #2 and #5.

3 - repair disk permissions with Disk Utility.

What graphics card do you have? NVIDIA based cards are known to cause freezing problems in iPhoto 11. Maybe it's affecting this as well.

I had this problem on a photo when I accidentally deleted it and then clicked "undo." When the photo restored, the "add a face was greyed out and it no longer recognized faces it did before I deleted it. I double clicked the photo, so I was only looking at that photo, and clicked menu option Photos>Detect Missing Faces. It found the faces that it originally had and also the "add a face" became active. Try that before rebuilding your library.

Hi there..

I stumbled on a similar problem today, trying to tag faces in two particular events. The "Add a face ..." option was inactive for all of their photos. I verified that the permissions were OK but I noticed that all these files did not have an extension. I would never have thought that this could be an issue since I could normally view the photos.. Anyway, that was it.. As soon as I added the extensions (massively for all the files, using the Automator) and re-imported the photos, faces tagging became possible..

Hope this helps
