I installed iPhoto ’11 on Friday 22nd Oct. and all seemed to be going well until I ran the program this morning and found all 534 of my ‘Gardner 2010’ images had been re-titled to ‘Srawberry Flowers’, where previously they were all dated and painstakingly titled. One of the images was previously titled ‘Strawberry Flowers’.

I have eleven other Events in this Album which are unaffected.

Thing I’ve done attempting to remedy this:
Restart iPhoto -- nothing changes.
Restart the MacBook Pro - start iPhoto -- nothing changes.
Used ‘App Zapper’ to trash iPhoto ’11 and then installed a clean version. -- still nothing has changed.

Is it a lost cause?

After reading many forum threads, I used the following techniques and achieved a flawless installation of iLife 11. Do the following things, in the order listed.

1. Go to Font Book in Applications. Select Edit/Show All Duplicate Fonts. Then select Edit/Resolve All Duplicates.

2. Open your current version of iPhoto. Delete all videos and delete all Projects and Keepsakes. These are not compatible with iPhoto 11. Empty your iPhoto trash.

3. Install iLfie 11, but do not open any of the applications yet.

4. After the installation, immediately run Repair Disk Permissions.

5. Now you should be able to open iPhoto and it will only upgrade your library one time. You should be good to go. However, beware that it may quit unexpectedly like mine did. And there is a glitch. If you select a photo and then hit the Edit button to open another application for editing, iPhoto will create a duplicate of the original photo right next to the one you edited in that Event. Just move the second one to the iPhoto trash. Apple needs to fix that!

6. You will also discover that iPhoto no longer lists your Event titles with the folders where your photos are stored in the iPhoto library. To work around this, go into Finder under iPhoto library and do a right click. Select "Show Package Contents." Your new photos will be listed inside the "Masters" folder. You have to drill down through "10" for October, and then to the day that the Event was created. Once you find the final folder where your Event is stored, make an alias of it and move the alias to a convenient folder where you would like to organize your photos. Aliased photos will show up in other applications. Just remember to always save new versions of them in a separate location.

2. Open your current version of iPhoto. Delete all videos and delete all Projects and Keepsakes. These are not compatible with iPhoto 11. Empty your iPhoto trash

This is not the case. I updated two iPhoto Libraries without doing this and all came through safely.

6. You will also discover that iPhoto no longer lists your Event titles with the folders where your photos are stored in the iPhoto library

This changed in iPhoto 09.

To work around this,

There is no need to work around this.

go into Finder under iPhoto library and do a right click. Select "Show Package Contents."

You need to warn people that accessing your Library in this way is +not supported+ and can very easily lead to database corruption.

Instead: use any of the supported methods to access your files:

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:

*For Users of 10.5 and later*

You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.

You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:



*For users of 10.4 and later* ...

Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:

To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.

This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail

If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.

If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.

*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:

For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.

For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser

Other options include:

1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.

2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.

3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

iphoto 11 is a seriously flawed program!

Upgraded my macpro to iLife11 from 10. iPhoto upgraded catalog, imported some incredible images of moose my son and I took this past weekend. Viewed them, flagged etc in iphoto.

Today I open the program and it wants to upgrade the catalog which takes forever, when it's done the recent upload is not in the catalog. The images are gone and so is my son's hope of winning a local photo contest!

We just migrated from a powermac and have not got timemachine running on the new macpro! Wouldn't you know it...we're devastated we lost these incredible images.

Goodbye iPhoto, hello LR3!

My question is more straightforward. Forget the complains I have regarding my frozen upgrade, the loss of photos, etc. and the solutions that don't work for me. Where did the files actually go? The reason I ask is this: I used Data Rescue II and recovered a boatload of photos, some I recovered once before when I overwrote some HD space accidentally, BUT, I only have photos from 2000-2005. None of the photos I took this year are in the recovered data. This makes me wonder if they are not erased but somehow hidden completely due to a glitch. I find no files large enough to be my library (yes the new iPhoto library is puny compared to my old one) and I had nothing in the trash. Where did they actually go?

New 13" Macbook Pro- ran all software updates, ran permissions fixer. Then installed iLife 11. No issues with iLife after install.

My iPhoto library gone away the same way like yours. I ran Data Rescue 3 and I believe all the media, including photos and videos, are recovered. The issue I have is that some of the photos are super low resolution. I am sure the original photos are not in tat resolution. Also, the photos are mixed with iPhoto's Faces thumbnails. It will take me forever to separate Millions of thumbnails and photos. Also, I am reluctant in reimporting them into iPhoto 11. Maybe I should reinstall iPhoto 09 and use that for now instead.

These are the thumbnails from the Library. They are no use to you.

Also, the photos are mixed with iPhoto's Faces thumbnails. It will take me forever to separate Millions of thumbnails and photos.

Sort the folder on File size will separate them for you in second.

The sorting method works really well. Thanks. As for the resolution problem, it is not super poor, something like the size of the screen on an iPod Touch. If those are thumbnails preview generated by the iPhoto, I should be able to recover the original photo AND the preview together using data recovery software.. But it seems that all previews are recovered and only part of the original photos are recovered. Where are the rest?! I don't think I have yet re-write any of the data after deleting. The moment I finish upgrading the library and the moment of the start of the the recovery process is separated by just like 1 minute or so. Also, the library is on an external drive, I have not touched it in anyway after the upgrade.

You seem to be exceptionally knowledgable about this issue, do you work for Apple?
I have 20G iPhoto store and have just received iLife11 disks. Should I go ahead and install or
1. wait for Apple to release an update for iPhoto
2. do something to my harddive to minimise the possibility of having these problems

No I don't work for Apple. The Terms of Use on the right explain how the forum works.

Before you do anything back up your Library. Then back it up again.

I would wait for an update.
