Can see thumbnails, but can't enlarge a photo

Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Does it?

I'm afraid the pictures is probably deleted. You might see more freed up diskspace. It's a new feature in iPhoto 11.

my iphoto does the same thing. I can't enlarge any file from thumbnail that is over about 6meg. Does Iphoto have a phoblem raw files. It seems that it is identifying them as jpegs on the photo info and can't enlarge them. Smaller (real) jpeg photo thumbnails it doesn't have problems with. Is there a solution?

I too am having this problem. I had to rebuild my library after some problems and now I have thumbnails but when I try to enlarge them I get and black screen with an exclamation mark on it.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.

If that fails:

Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I am getting the exclamation mark as well. I have photoshop elements as my editor. When I click a photo to edit, in this case just cropping, I can see the enlarged photo in iphoto when PSE is open. As soon as I close PSE I lose the enlarged image and get the exclamation mark. How should I be saving the file? I don't understand what is happening.

Playing around with this. I would take a photo and just crop it in Photoshop elements (PSE). Save the file. Close PSE and then iphoto. Now before I closed I photo but after I closed PSE I could see the enlarged photo; however once I close iPhoto and reopen it, I can no longer enlarge the photo--I get the exclamation mark. Now, I went and said revert to original photo and my edited photo appears. What is happening? I love the iphoto suite but this is kind of ridiculous.

I rebuilt the database from automatic back up. However if I take a photo and edit it in PSE I still get the exclamation mark after I close iPhoto and reopen it. Something is happening that isn't correct. Any guidance would be appreciated. Again, if I edit the photo and close iPhoto after editing and reopen it I get the ! mark. I can then go to revert to original and my edited photo appears. Something is not right with iPhoto 11.

As a Test:

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'

Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

I will try doing what you suggest this evening. If this does work, how would I take the photos that I already have in the old iPhoto library and put to the new one?

You wouldn't. It would simply tell us there is an issue with that library and we can then try fix it.

Thanks for the advice. Option 1 I have tried already and gets the same result with all the thumbnails present but only the exclamation mark when I try to enlarge them. Rebuilding from the iphoto library manager only manages to retrieve one of my many albums.
