Java Virtual Machine & SPSS 18

Hi,

I'm getting the following error from SPSS 18.0.3 when I try to run descriptive statistics: Could not start Java Virtual Machine. Chart will not be drawn".

I need charts for my grad school assignment. I've never had this issue before, and since I've install the most recent patch, I think it must be an operating system error.

Any idea how to get SPSS to recognize/link up with JVM?

I have no idea how this works, so I need help!

I have the same problem of not beinge able to draw charts and getting the message "Could Not Start Java Virtual Machine. Chart will not be drawn." I have looked it up on the net and apparently the solution is to install PASW 18.0.3 patch and then 18.0.3.4 hotfix. But I can't find these files any where. If someone could help and send me these files, I will be eternally grateful. email: abbas616(at)gmail(dot)com. Thank you!

Below is a result that works for now via the SPSS site in Japan. Don't worry, you don't need to read the kanji.

1) Download the 18.0.3 patch directly from the SPSS web site in Japan (http://www.spss.co.jp/support/tech_info/download/patch/spss/Statistics1803/PASWS tatistics_1803_Mac_Patch.dmg) and save it on your hard drive. It is approximately 130Mb so will take a while to download.

2) Make sure PASW is not running. Open the patch and follow the installation. Open PASW and go to about PASW on the top menu and make sure that the version now is 18.0.3. This is very important. If the version is not 18.0.3. do not proceed. Most likely the patch was not installed properly. You must do this first.

3) Now you have to install PASW 18.0.3.4 hotfix. Download the 'Hotfix' file from http://db.tt/sfRcf4z. When you click on this link, a file (libspssjvm.dylib) will be downloaded.

4) Again make sure that PASW is not running.

5) Using FINDER find PASWStatistics18.0.app icon and right click on it. The menu with an option 'Show Package Contents' will open.

6) Click on this option and a new menu opens. Open the folder <Content> and then <lib>.

7) Copy the downloaded hotfix file 'libspssjvm.dylib' to this <lib> folder. If it asks you to replace an existing file, accept.

8) Restart Statistics 18.0 and it should be working now.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jon,

Thanx for your message..(!!!!) However, I'm having a bit of a problem with the following step:

5) Using FINDER find PASWStatistics18.0.app icon and right click on it. The menu with an option 'Show Package Contents' will open.

Maybe its just me (as I just bought a new MBA, first mac ever so...) but when I find PASW in finder and right click on it.. PASW just starts running instead of displaying a menu..

Could you help me out please

🙂

Thnx a lot!

No problem, you will get used to it. To right-click on a mac I suggest that you hold down the 'ctrl' key and then click on the PASW icon (one click only). This will bring up a context menu which allows you to move the cursor down to the option to 'show package contents' where you can click again. If you've got mac PowerBook you can always use two fingers to tap the pad at the same time and this will be the same as right-click. If you still struggle getting used to it then plug in an ordinary USB mouse and try that. All ways are good.
