How does the "Birthday" calendar work, and can I delete it?

I am not sure I need the birthday calendar and would probably like to delete it. Is this birthday calendar connected to the contacts list, and are the birthdays automatically inserted for each contact? How do I delete the "birthday" calendar so I never see it again? Thanks.
