That *****.. I wish apple would step up to the plate and tell us the correct way to get our beloved iphoto 9 back without doing a full TM restore to the entire computer! I'd hate to lose my emails and everything else I've done since a week ago! I wonder if just putting my ilife '09 disk in and running that would restore everything I need, then go back in time and bring my iphoto library up to the present?

Went searching for iPhoto image library as the first step in reverting to the previous version of iPhoto, but found only the following iPhoto Library, then iPhoto Library 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 - all separate folders. Each contains the data/originals/modified versions of images. I this what you mean by 'iPhoto image library'?? (I've just installed i11 and it's impossible and would like to revert to the previous version).

OK - I have discovered the error.

I had NOT restored the iPhoto App from the Time Machine Backup - but had instead REINSTALLED iPhoto from the "iLife 09 Install DVD".

There were a number of updates to iPhoto '09 and after I let the Software Update happen the backed up library no longer showed the error when opened in (the now slightly updated) iPhoto. The error went something like - "The library was created with a later version of iPhoto...". Yes, a later version of '09.

Followed the wrong path thinking it was still looking for iPhoto '11.

Solved for me anyway. Hope you all have luck "down-grading" to the better version.

I kick myself for falling into the trap of getting the latest iLife. I should know by now not to upgrade to iLife again. Especially after iMovie 7 (I think it was that version - give or take a version) took away so many of my favourite functions and wasted the iMovie plug-ins that I had bought.

I also tried iPhoto 11 and found some odd things.

Esc does not bring you back to events when you are looking at phone inside an event.
You cannot split or merge using keyboard.

When you filter photos you cannot see which event photos belong to.

    toolbar from bottom is missing.

    lot less options in menu

    lot less preferences

for a moment it looks like as if iPhoto'09 is version which came after iPhoto'11.

Good I got to find this out on another friends system rather then spending 50 bucks for this.

iPhoto was pearl in mac's neckless. looks like new users have one less reason to move to mac from windows anymore as Live Photo gallery is free for windows.

    True

You cannot split or merge using keyboard.

You can assign keyboard shortcuts using the Keyboard PreferencePane.

When you filter photos you cannot see which event photos belong to.

Right click on a pic and go 'Show Event'

    toolbar from bottom is missing.

    Different, not missing.

    lot less options in menu

No, but some have been consolidated into sub-menus.

    lot less preferences

    Consolidated

OK, finally got '09 back and here's what I did. First I deleted my .plist file (as mentioned in an earlier post)... but DO NOT RESTORE IT FROM YOUR TIME MACHINE BACKUP... IT WILL REPLACE ITSELF THE FIRST TIME YOU RUN IPHOTO. THEN I renamed the iphoto library that I had with '11 and removed it from the folder to the desktop. Then I went into my time machine (TM) and restored a backup of '09 (which replaced '11). Then I went to the same date and restored my iphoto library. Note. none of my iphoto libraries earlier than the date of the '11 install had the iphoto icon on them. Well, I have about 9000 photos so it took nearly 24 hours. the first time I tried this (earlier post) the library that imported was only 18 gb and my '11 library was 29 gb, and when I tried to run the '09 iphoto, it didn't work. so I tried it again and this time it was 29 gb (just a few mb shy of the latest one because I had taken some more photos... which i lost in the transition but they weren't important. When I tried to run '09, it said I had to update my library (whoa, here, that's what it said when I installed '11.. that made me nervous... but I said "OK" anyway.) Well when it got done, everything was perfect. If I were going to do again, I'd drop iphoto '11 into appzapper and let it get rid of the app and all associated files, then I'd restore from an earlier time. I hope this works for you.

The 9.0.1 update completely hosed my iMac. It takes me over a minute to type in a short message like this and i have had to restart 10 times since yesterday. I can't even Force Quit apps to get away from the beachball. I would like to see a step by step tutorial on reverting. The solutions here seem too convoluted.

I just upgraded my Mac with iPhoto 11. I was mesmerized by the new features, but now wish I would have read some of the comments. Many of my photos that were crystal clear in the old format are now grainy and pixilated. And when trying to load photos to Facebook iPhoto has locks up completly causing me to have to hold the power button down until the entire computer shuts down. Do you have any advise? If I go back to iphoto 09 do I loose the photos I have uploaded since the upgrade to 11?

Ho exactly did you upgrade? Did you import a Library?

    Terence,
Upgrade or downgrade? Think about it. How do you upgrade? You buy a program (ilife '11) and install it. That upgrades you. It also changes your iphoto library so that you can't go back to '09 without trashing your '11 iphoto library and then finding an old copy (on your time machine backups) of the '09 iphoto library and reinstalling either ilife '09 or just iphoto '09. If you go back and read my previous post, I tell you how I did it.

    chocolatemac,
you need to go back in this post and read how I went back to '09. You don't have to lose any photos you took while you were in '11. Just select all those new photos and drag them to your desktop. Then follow my directions for reverting back to '09 earlier in these posts and finally drag your newer photos back into iphoto.

I would also like to revert to iPhoto '09 but I do not have a time machine backup. Any suggestions?

My previous workflow was to take a few hundred pictures and then go through them full screen with the info window open. I would give the good ones five stars and then delete the remainder.

Even in "full screen" mode, I can no longer view a photo in full screen and tag it five stars with an unobtrusive, floating info window.

I also noticed that when I changed the info from five stars to zero stars, many of my changes did not save. This is a bug that will probably get fixed so I'm not too worried about it. Not being able to go through my pics in true full screen is a step backward and the reason I want to revert to iPhoto 09.

If anyone has suggestions for how I can revert to iPhoto 09 without a Time Machine backup, I'd be much obliged.

    Thanks,
    Justin

    P.S. I'm happy with the iMovie upgrade. : )

I'm quite familiar with the upgrade process, thanks. However, my response was not to you but to someone else. Perhaps the quote I used in my post might have helped you understand that. Your point was?

Do you have a version 09 Library? If not then you would need to start over from scratch.
