Can't turn on wifi on iPod

I reset my iPod (1st gen, 2.2) and resynced all my music and photos - no problem. But, when I tried to turn on wifi from the settings panel, I noticed that the selection tool was grey. It says "no wifi" and I can't find directions anywhere to turn the option back on. Any suggestions?
