I don't know whether this is an Apple problem or a Microsoft one, but on searching the Net it does seem that it is a widespread one involving various applications.

A few months ago I purchased and installed Office 2008 for Mac from the CD and then updated it by means of AutoUpdate whenever an update became available. Most recently I updated to v. 12.2.7. I have had no problems with installing any of the updates, and all parts of 12.2.7 work on my system — except that AutoUpdate now will no longer open.

The AutoUpdate Crash Log says 'Symbol not found: __stack_chkguard'. Searching on the Net, I see, as I said above, that this is a common problem involving various applications.

I am in touch with Microsoft Office for Mac Technical Support, but they have not yet come up with a solution. I wonder whether anyone can tell me whether there is a solution from the Apple point of view? Is ' __stack_chkguard' something that can be downloaded from somewhere and installed?

Any information will be most gratefully received.

Hi, BDAqua,

I had read those posts in the forums as well, but also found others that dealt with quite unconnected applications but displayed the same error message. That is why I wondered whether it was a Mac issue. Moreover, when I followed Microsoft's instructions and cleared out every item of Office and re-installed the old version from my CD (in Safe Mode so as to eliminate conflicts), the AutoUpdate (which had previously worked) still did not work. So I began to fear that the last Office update had somehow damaged my Mac's operating system.

I have to update the situation. Microsoft instructed me to remove every single file connected with MS Office 2008 and then to create a new user account and re-install the old version of Office 2008 while in 'Safe Mode' from the original CD. I did so — in fact three times, trying to make quite sure that I had missed nothing — but the AutoUpdater (which had worked when I first installed Office 2008) still would not open and the crash log showed the same error message. Since then, MS have repeatedly instructed me to do the same thing all over again; I have not repeated the process for the fourth time!

Is it possible that the latest Office 2008 update has corrupted my Mac operating system? If so, how can I obtain the latest version of OS X 10.4.11 in order to repair that situation?

My thanks in anticipation of any suggestions.

Apparently it has damaged some OS component, couple of things to try...

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then reapply the big combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html

Repair Permissions afterwords, reboot.

If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

I believe that Microsoft incorrectly built the autoupdate program so that it does not work on Tiger. They are probably using GCC 4.2 or 4.3 to compile and using the stack protection feature which is not supported under Tiger. They need to compile without the option -fstack-protector-all
