How to manually arrange pictures in Slide Show in iPhoto 11

This is by design. iPhoto is template driven and the templates are fixed. This makes it very easy for inexperienced users to make an attractive slideshow fast. If you've out grown those templates then you've outgrown the iPhoto slideshow feature and i's time to look for a more capable app.


Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:

iMovie, on every Mac sold, as is iDVD.

Others, in order of price:

PhotoPresenter $29

PhotoToMovie $49.95

PulpMotion $129

FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)

Final Cut Express $199

It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs.

However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Express is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.

U can alter the order/arrangement of the pics in your slide show to a degree, u do this by dragging the thumbnails of your images which r displayed along the top in your slide show window to up and down the timeline to the point where u would like them to appear in the slideshow.

Hi, I am trying to create a slideshow for work and I just upgraded to '11 and I cannot change the order of the photos. I could do it the way you stated in the previous version of iphoto, but not now. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks

Are you running the slideshow from an event or smart album?

Try creating an album from the selected photos. Rearrange them from within the album and run the slideshow again.

Thank you for this very thoughtful and thorough response Terence.

I was totally impressed with the "themes" in iPhoto and Aperture until they haphazardly started displaying three and four photos at once. And terrible crops to boot. As a photographer, I just want to show my slides one at a time, more or less at full frame but with a little "pizzaz." iPhoto and Aperture both fail in this regard as I am stuck with "classic" and Ken Burns.

I'll have to keep looking I guess but am certainly open to suggestions. Thanks!

I just checked and found that I'm able to change the order of photos in an iPhoto slideshow manually my selecting and dragging the thumbnails in the tray at the top.

I tried it successfully with a couple of themes. Remember, this was for an iPhoto slideshow created via the Create button at the bottom of the iPhoto window:
