Missing QuickTime Plugin.plugin

Hi,

I have a huge problem with QuickTime Player that it doesn't running very well with Safari, Chrome, and Mozilla. It sometimes freeze and disconnected. I saw other people have similar problems like this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2230875&start=30&tstart=0

I tried to look in Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and noticed that I don't have any files in there even missing QuickTime Plugin.plugin. I still have QuickTime 10 and 7 installed. Does anybody know what is going on? Could you please help me how to fix it.

Thanks!

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Hi

Safari-Help-Installed Plug-Ins is the best way to tell what plugins are active - if Quicktime (& others) show up there, you may have been looking in the wrong library...

you need HD /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
Open your Mac HD in Finder - then open the Library in there - it should be listed along with
Applications, System and Users.

Get that straight first, & then tell us what's up with quicktime.

Hey there!

I have the same problem with playing QuickTime content in web browsers.

I have MacOS 10.6.7 with pre-installed QuickTime X.

It doesnt play QuickTime movies in the web browsers.

In Safari it says "missing plugin", in Google Chrome it says "Get QuickTime" and redirects to QuickTime 7 download page which is older than installed one.

I checked both USERNAME/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ AND MAC HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ folders and there is no quicktime plugin file in there.

Also in Safari Help/Installed plugins there is no quicktime plugin.

The QuickTime Player works normally.

Any suggestions?

It's been removed somehow - reinstall the OS, or transfer it from a backup/other mac, or use Pacifist from http://charlessoft.com/ to extract it from an install DVD or some updates - it's in the 10.6.7 combo for example, so and/or running that update would most likely replace it too.

If extracting or copying manually - it's

QuickTime Plugin.plugin & should be in Mac HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

>>i dont want to reinstall the whole OS. will it delete all the apps and settings?

No, those should all be retained, only OS components will be replaced, but of course the combo & other updates will be required afterwards.

>> the volume doesnt meet the requirements for this update.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

something amiss in the system, that is checked for as part of the installation (might be just a version number) - the Installer.log, visible in Console application, may be more specific.

>>but i can copy manually the quicktime plugin using pacifist???

You can indeed - extract it from the combo or grab it from another mac or backup. Speaking of which, do make some if you don't already have some; doubly so since something obviously happened to that plugin & additionally another item has been changed so that the installer, 'won't'.
