iPad wifi speeds at 20mb cap?

Hello all,

Hope you can help me on this, I have a 50mb connection (virgin media) it runs over WiFi, on my MacBook Pro I get a speed of around 40-45mbps, however when I do a speed test on my iPad (same goes for my iPhone 4) it can never reach above 20mbps, I know that this is still fast but it would be nice to see my full speed, is this an issue with the iPad/iPhone itself or is it a simple setting that I seem to be missing.

Thank you in advance for your help on this

I have an iPad Air 2 and was having the same issue. My internet speed is 60Mbps but I was only getting about 20-25Mbps over my iPad. I logged in to my Netgear router and went to the QoS settings and Enabled WMM (Wi-Fi multimedia) settings. I now get 60Mbps on my iPad. My Galaxy S6 connection speed was already getting the 60Mbps speed and that did not change after enabling WMM.

I hope that simple setting helps.

I'd love to see an explanation too.

I can add that according to AirPort Utility, my iPad never connects faster than 39 mbps with 802.11n. That may result in 20 mbps in real-world throughput, I don't know. No-one has been able to explain this to me. My best guess is that this was done intentionally to save power. That may be a reasonable trade-off for most people, since their ISPs aren't that fast anyway and most iPad downloads are pretty small.

As with you, I find that the network speed of the iPad, even if it is hobbled, is faster than my ISP. But the future may have a faster ISP. Or maybe there will be the possibility of wireless synching with other computers at home. Then the slow speed would be a bottleneck.

If this was an intentional design decision, say to increase battery life, then can appreciate (and perhaps agree with) it. If its a flaw then I'd like to see it fixed.

My internet connection is fibreoptics. 100Mps down and 10 Mbps up. I use a new time capsule as my wifi router , emitting a 5Ghz signal. (11n) On my macbookpro late 2011 i get speeds of about 90Mbps down and 10 up as measured by speedtest.net with the nearest server. Using the same network, from the same position and with the speetest.net app on my new iPad (3) , I get about 15 down and 10 up. I do not understand why the down speed is so much slower than on the macbook pro. And in fact the it is not just speed test. Downloading the same large document takes seconds on me MBPro and minutes on the iPad . Interestingly the speedtest application'graphic on the web as seen on MBPro goes to 100Mbps. while the graphic on the iPad app goes to 20, as if now one woudl ever need higher figures . Does this imply the iPad is capped at 20?
