same issue; happened to me. mine is now a brick too. apple care will support you if its when you do the software upgrade for a few days. however, they had no clue what was happening, so I now have an appt Monday at an apple store fo rthem to resolve. this happens every time I upgrade my ipad or iphone. syncing is just fine, but the upgrade puts them into recovery mode and apple has no clue.....help! any thoughts?

i was updating my ipad to 4.2 version.
as many others i had the same problem during the update: the installation stuck at 95%.
i searched the web and i found a solution that said to take the ipad to recovery mode with a program called tinyumbrella. than exit the recovery mode with it.
but after the stepped into recovery mode the program didnt recognized my ipad anymore.
the itunes says that i have to restore my ipad but there is a lot of indispensable media on it i do not want to lose (honeymoon images and videos)
after searching a few hours i found this post:

ry-mode.html
this guy says the only solution to not to lose data is apple support center.
can it be true? this is the only way?
unfortunatelly in my country we do not have this kind of support.
please help! im desperate!
thanks,
daniel.

I was on the sofa watching football and when I picked up my iPad to check scores I found that the device had go into recovery mode. I didn't know that's what it was at first, but when I plugged into iTunes I was told I needed to do a recovery. So I called Apple support and of course they wanted me to pay the $29 for support to correct this flow in their product. Since it seemed like a remarkably cheap move to me that apple would try to charge customers for such an obvious product specific error I simply had to restore my iPad to a recent backup version and walk away from any data I had added to the iPad since my update to iOS 4.

Pretty cheap move by Apple, but at least I won't be tempted to buy any additional Apple products for family, friends or myself this holiday season.

Similar problem. Upgraded to 4.2 the day of release. Last night, charged iPad, used it for an hour or so, set iPod to run a playlist to put me to sleep. Woke up and iPad was in restore mode with no clue as to why. Restoring now, we'll see what happens. At the least, this incident is very irritating. I use the iPad extensively for work and am certain that some data has been lost.
