iMovie 11 does not allow the capture of a still from video

This is why it's nice to have both iMovie 06 and iMovie 11.

You can still do it by exporting via quicktime as an image sequence.

iMovie will import all of the Videos from your Camera, and you can use iPhoto to Import your Photos.
After that, you can use iMovie to access the photos from the iPhoto library.

From the iMovie menu bar select: *"Window > Photos"*, then drag the photos to your Project.

Well, we can always do it the old fashion way...
-New Project
-Select the small sliver of footage you want to get still from and add to project
-Export using Quicktime
-Select Movie to Image Sequence
-Select your options of choice
-Export sequence to folder

With cursor at the frame you want, right (control) click and pick Add Freeze Frame.

Afterimages is right!
_ Move the playhead to a Video Frame you would like to capture a still from
_ Right click and select "Add Freeze Frame".

This is not what the original poster asked. He is interesting in capturing a still frame from iMovie to use in some other app like iPhoto.

Oh yes, as AppleMan1958 wrote, it IS a good workaraound to get jpg (or tiff...) stills from Imovie 11: If you make freeze frames and export the project via Quicktime with the option "Image sequence", you can choose in the options if you want jpg's or tiff's or...
If you set the duration of the freeze frames to 0.1 s before the export (you can choose all and set the duration for all at the same time), you only get two or three stills by freeze frame.

I might be barking up the wrong tree here but i always need still from my wedding videos and im in the same boat I ahvn't tried it yet but i'm going to trsy taking a screen shot ( SHIFT- CMD - 4 ) and edit that in a program like photoshop..... and then bring it into iphoto or something???

I also have upgraded to iMovie '11, I am very disappointed with the creating of a JPEG from imovie. I have taken a step backwards and have to import clips into iMovie '06 and from there, create JPEGS for still photographs. Pity such a basic feature has been take out of iMovie '11 Otherwise a great upgrade.
